Ron Paul in an exasperated tone during the Iowa debates: “All these trade sanctions!…this is why we still don’t have a trade relationship with Cuba.”

Ground Control to Candidate Paul: according to figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce the U.S. has transacted almost $4 BILLION in trade with Cuba over the past decade. Up until two years ago the U.S. served as Stalinist Cuba’s biggest food supplier and fifth biggest import partner. We’ve fallen a few notched recently but we’re still in the top half. Furthermore, the U.S. has been Castro’s Cuba’s biggest donor of humanitarian aid including medicine and medical supplies for decades...

The United States has no Trade Relations with Cuba. The sanctions are enormous.

Cubas population has been around 11 million for the last 10 years. http://www.one.cu/aec2009/esp/20080618_tabla_cuadro.htm

Commerce with Cuba has been around 400 million per year for the last 10 years (if the sources of the OP article are correct).

So some math will tell us that the US has transacted approximately $37 for each Cuban citizen per year for the last 10 years. Nice trade relations we have going there...

I agree, it's more of a humanitarian effort than actual trade...

I agree, it's more of a humanitarian effort than actual trade...

and trade would be so much easier and benefit both nations.

lol @ the comment section. Apparently Ron Paul is a jew-hating, amnesty granting, ally abandoning. enemy supporting, heartless bastard who cares nothing of the poor. He's to be compared to hitler because of the bizarre and hateful ideas he has. And the people who support him are pajama wearing kooks living in their moms basement.

What loving people. We need more of these types of people in America. They're the true holders of knowledge, if only those of us with our kooky ideas took our meds we'd see that. They're also never quick to judge others or label them, as is clearly evidenced by the way they describe Ron Paul and his supporters. Such open minds. But then again it's easy to have an open mind when you have an empty head.

Maybe $4 billion now, but imagine how much it would actually be if the government didn't prohibit trade with Cuba.

I actually appreciate this man's attack.
It was well reasoned, well planned, and contained much factual information.
First they ignore you, then they mock you, then they attack you... then you win.

The fact that someone is taking the time to nitpick his ideas, to go beyond John Stewart's summary of "I mean, fuck that guy, right?", is proof that we're winning.
