I have been unemployed for 2 years, since moving back to Michigan. Our unemployment state wide is the highest in the country, and even higher in my part of the UP.
I would like to have this farm support me eventually, but I take odd jobs as they are available.
I do Autobody and paint, (weather permitting) mechanical, and construction.
The farm keeps me busy.

I don't know if it counts as self employment, but I'm a contractor working as a software engineer in IP telecommunications.

I'm a wedding and portrait photographer. The way to do it is to do menial jobs and save up a lot of money so that you can support yourself for at least one year without a problem. In that first year, be willing to give an arm and a leg to your clients to make them the happiest people on earth. Have a great website, communicate with just about anybody who might be "in the business" you're in, and run promotions like crazy.

If anybody on this forum lives in the NC-SC-TN-VA area and supports Ron Paul and needs a photographer, for instance, I'd be happy to give them a $100 print or album credit. :)

I'm self employed. Not much too it really. Get a business license and do what you want to do. I do tech support/computer repair and sell used computers that I slap together at nice low prices.

As of Monday, I will no longer have a boss.

I'll be teaching guitar lessons privately instead of out of a music store. Its a hilarious job. I don't need a business license for that, do I?

Just sold my first company and am opening my first (in what will become a small chain) party store. Its about 10,585 sq. Ft. of party goodness. We hope to open 5 stores in 4 - 6 years. Hopefully positioning ourselves to be bought out by one fo the national chains when they finally come to our section of the world.

working for my self means two things.

1. My boss is a complete ass.
2. My employees are lazy.

I part time at a major conservative talk radio station. But the bulk of my income is derived from my various entrepreneurial endeavors.

I'm looking to get into self-employment. I work primarily as a programmer, but I can't think of any good self-employment ideas.

I also have an, IMHO, high-quality blog. According to Google Analytics, I have a regular audience of 100-200 readers. I'm not making any money off it, though.

You will need to lodge regular movement reports with the department of homeland travel.
