Fuck. A. Bunch. Of. Computer. Cars.

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/08/10/1730230/Dashboard-Avatar-To-Replace-Car-Owners-Manuals

"At one time not all that long ago, cars had a warning light on the dashboard that simply said 'ENGINE.' That's pretty vague. Really, it might just as well have said 'CAR.' Some newer automobiles now have codes that appear on the console, which the driver must then look up in an index in the vehicle's owner's manual. Working with Audi, Germany's Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) Institute of Business Informatics is now working on taking things a step farther, with the development of an on-screen avatar that will talk to drivers, and even understand their spoken questions."

And the most common question people will ask when their car leaves them stranded on the side of the road:

"Why me? Why does this always happen to me?"

I'd like to see what the avatar's answer is.

my grandfather would roll in his grave if i ever needed a computer to tell me what was wrong with my car. useless crap just drives up prices...

I used to do all my own work but the newer cars seem to be intentionally designed to make it difficult and more time consuming to do your own work. I am assuming this is intentional so you have to bring it back to the dealer. With all the technology and the problems that go with that I have even had local shops turn me away and tell me to take it to the dealer since that stuff is over their head.

The Dealerships make more money on repairs and Warranty work than they do on the sale of a car. That is, estimating that all the oil changes and repairs are done on the car at the dealership, and the car was purchased new.

This is why I'm bidding on a 1986 chevy truck as we speak.

Classic Campaigning truck for sale.

I'm selling a good running 1955 International pickup.

PM Me

Pictures below

$7899 OBO

Great running Original Straight 6 cylinder International Harvester (IHC) R-110 1/2ton pickup truck. Fully ready to drive. Custom fitted camper canopy.

You won't find a better classic truck for this price. Most of them at this price don't even run, much less look this nice. This one is fully licensed, fully operational, and ready to go!

I wish I could keep it. I have used it as a business backup truck for a few years, but it is not practical for use on the freeway fleet vehicle. I can't afford to keep a truck that I can't really use for the entire geographic area of my business. I need to sell this and get a modern truck. Hopefully Enough to buy a Dodge Dakota or similar vehicle. I will entertain trades. Will trade for midsize pickups with decent fuel economy. Dakota V6 or V8, F-150 V6 or Chevy/GM 1500 V6. Regular or extended cab. No quad/crew cabs. Manual transmissions preferred.

As a member of my 7 vehicle fleet, this vehicle has received professional maintanance from our on-staff mechanic. Parts are available from Outback parts in Spokane. The body is in good condition with only a few minor issues related to regular work use. The bed has a spray on bedliner, and is covered with an ARE professional Deluxe commercial canopy with double locking ladder racks.

It has a modern stereo, and has been converted to a modern 12V alternator rather than its original 6V generator.
It has also been upgraded with heavier duty front brakes, and better shocks all around.
I have replaced the original taillights with LED lights for brighter and MUCH more reliable.
The original wheels have been cleaned and powdercoated and sealed to allow for tubeless radial tires instead of original tubed biasply, but it still has the original hubcaps.

It has an oilbath air filter, and carberator and gets about 12-14mpg.

2WD. Manual 4 speed. (1st gear is a granny)

I love this truck, and hate to sell it, but economics rules. I just can't afford to keep it just for local jobs. My business is spread out over the whole west side of WA state.

Tabs recently renewed. Good through August 2012.

All electrical works.

Are you starting a business that does local home-service. This rig will really stand out. My business just does too much long-distance freeway to make this truck practical. Also makes a great campaigning truck for you local parade campaigners.

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. PM Me.

Binder folks! No wonder I feel at home!

Nice truck Icymudpuppy.:)

My dad had a '57 IH 4x4 back in the '70's.

In the late 90's I had a '61 chassis '66-'68 bodied short bed 3/4 ton 4x4 with the t-18 granny low and the 240 Black Diamond. (cobbled together junkyard tow rig)

Made wheels for it myself to replace the split rims.:)

The 6 on 7 1/4" bolt pattern isn't quite as popular as one would think..:D

Still got the wheels, tranny, driveshafts and transfer case.

Quite the over-engineered trucks.:)

That is a nice truck. Im running a 2004 Chevy Blazer and can not stand the computerized bullshit they've overloaded it with, even if it does run pretty nice. The only electronics in a car that I want are the ones I put in there. Radar Detector, Stereo, Non Transmitting GPS, CB Radio, etc.

Note: stay the hell away from Tom Toms, they transmit your position and speed to the cops. Already posted the News Article on this.

State inspections sure haven't helped many people avoid purchasing newer cars. We're getting ready to "trade up" here because our state inspection sticker's expiring and it'll need more work done than's worth to get it back up to code. It's pretty rare to see a 20th century car on the roads here unless someone's put tens of thousands of dollars in it. Can't wait to move back to Michigan so we don't have to deal with this kind of bs. I wonder how much longer before states begin to mandate autonomous cars for "safety reasons."

Yeah, but in Michigan, they salt the roads, which as I remember, corrodes the shit out of the bottom of your car.

That can be damaging, yes... Not sure if there's a suitable alternative with so much black ice, though. It's used on just about all the private parking lots, too. Haven't looked into it.

I'd buy that truck if I could. It would indeed make a most excellent campaign truck. Wouldn't be fair to spend campaign money on it though, plus getting it to NC from WA state would be a chore and a half.

I always wondered that too. Some of the "Salts" I've seen are potassium chloride, not sodium chloride. Guess its cheaper, but the salt damage to cars in Michigan I know kills the resale value. When I moved out to Nevada from Michigan, we had bigtime problems getting rid of our old cars because of the extensive salt damage.

They use sand around here, but hell, its a desert, high desert, so yes, it does snow, in fact, in winter, quite frequently. One thing about the high desert that I'll take anyday over Michigan is the nights cool off so youre not inside with 80 degree temperatures and 95% humidity. That, and the fucking Mosquitos!

It'll make the drive. I'd deliver it to you in person if you can wait for January, and you'll reimburse my fuel. I'll be in WV. Just a hop skip and jump from NC.
