Obama Administration to Call for Syria's Assad to Step Down

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/08/09/obama-administration-to-call-for-syrias-assad-to-step-down/#ixzz1UaxEb18N

The Obama administration is planning to explicitly call for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down in coming days, two administration officials told FoxNews.

The State Department signaled for the first time that American efforts to engage the Syrian government are finally over. The White House is expected to lay out the tougher line by the end of this week, possibly on Thursday.

The administration will first consult with the United Nations Security Council as the Treasury Department prepares a new set of sanctions aimed at Assad's family and his government, the officials told FoxNews.

This sounds exactly like a re-run of Lybia...

Mmm. More sanctions. Sorry, but I can't think of the last time that sanctions actually had any effect. But at least it makes people feel that they are doing something I guess.

Oh, sanctions have an effect alright. People die from their effects. Just ask the people of Iraq.

another war, probably; but this is not necessarily bad for our side. forces Romney and Agent Bachmann to take a stand, and it will be pro-war (as per BB)

True and not true. War is inevitable with the cronies in washington on top. They have the list and they are going to run through it. The only thing that we can hope for is that they time it wrong so the people wake up to deception and vote for a decent government. And that is exactly what cindy25 is hoping.

Yeah, people like Madeline Albright:

When asked on US television if she [Madeline Albright, US Secretary of State] thought that the death of half a million Iraqi children [from sanctions in Iraq] was a price worth paying, Albright replied: “This is a very hard choice, but we think the price is worth it.”

Americans are more informed about homeless cats than millions of dead children under the age of 5:
From a 1998 article:

One in four Iraqi children are malnourished, according to UNICEF. Many of those who survive will suffer permanent brain damage or stunted growth.

The U.N. Security Council has said the sanctions will not be lifted until Iraq complies with Gulf War resolutions demanding the elimination of all the country's weapons of mass destruction.

Iraq, however, says it has come clean and that the sanctions must be lifted to help the nation recover from the devastating 1991 Gulf War. The government accuses the United States and its allies of maintaining the sanctions in the hope that the resulting hardship will spark a revolt against President Saddam Hussein.

Sanctions have always had a devastating effect. The effects just aren't made public in the US of Ignorant.

It had nothing to do with any of the other wars either, but that didn't stop it from being an excuse and justification.

Please ask yourselves this question. If the citizens of the U.S. were uprising against the government and rioting in the streets what would our government do? Would they give in to the demands of the rioters, would they kill them or would they simply step down? What do you think would happen? I'm betting our goverment would react in much the same way as the Syrian government is reacting.

Don't worry, it won't be a war. Just "kinetic contact" between American missiles and Syrian targets. Obviously that doesn't mean war, so Obama won't need any congressional approval. Not that McCain and Lieberman wouldn't actively lobby for such approval to be granted...

This is just more ammo for Dr. Paul. They are stumbling their way right into his line of fire. What are the other GOP candidates going to do? Support Obama? Side with Dr. Paul? They'll be damned if they do, damned if they don't. I'll enjoy watching them try this balancing act.
