Congratulations to the tea party. Now we’ve seen what happens when they take their disruptive tactics from town halls to Congress.

When you see the interest rate rise on your mortgage, you can thank the tea party for the damage that they’ve done to our national credit rating by blocking any suggestions to raise taxes on the rich as part of a deficit-reduction package.

Their insistence on slashing government spending, even as our nation teeters on the brink of plunging back into recession, clearly didn’t go over well on Wall Street last week. If you watched your retirement-fund investments plummet, you’ll know that America’s capital markets don’t trust “tea-conomics.”

Classical Keynesian economics tells us that that we need more, not less government spending, in order to stimulate job creation in a recession. If you’re struggling to find a decent-paying job, you can thank the tea party for prolonging your misery.

I do wonder where these deficit hawks were, when the economy came roaring into the early years of the Bush administration. That would have been the time to pay down our national debt, instead of doling out tax cuts to the rich and spending trillions to invade and occupy Iraq.

The worst part is that the tea party politicians in Congress are just getting started. We can vote them out in 2012, but they’ll leave us all with a caffeine hangover, as this Great Recession drags on far longer than it should have.
