Poll where?

The poll takes time to compose. It seems one has to post the question and then create the poll. This was the first time I did one of these.

I am an undergraduate majoring in Anthropology, and probably double majoring in sociology soon. Just have yet to make it official. I am intent on graduate school afterwards. I'm 21 if that matters.

I was home schooled growing up and basically taught myself everything I know. I tried taking a few classes, but there's no way in hell I can learn with a teacher breathing down my neck telling me HOW I should learn and being slowed down by a bunch of druggies asking lame questions. I know when I've learned something, so taking a test to prove it to someone else ticks me off no end. Oh, and I could never take a class I dislike just because I need the credit -- I don't take orders well.

College was the biggest waste of time for me. It's not worth the money unless you do something specialized.

That is what some college was supposed to represent. :( I thought about including it but the problem is while there are some associate's degrees that are highly specialized, such as Radiologic Technology and really could be considered a degree, a general associate's degree is really no different from someone who simply dropped out of college.

It might have its upside but college / HS is a tool for the elite to make sure the public is dumbed dwn....sit in any eco class & you will know what I mean....still dnt believe me? Watch the Norman dodd interview below.

Degrees do not mean much in terms of how bright one is. I have first hand experience in dealing with people who have doctrines and couldn't tie their own shoes if they had to.

BTW forgot to mention, I fall under the "some college" level. I was smart enough to realize that in my career field of computer programming, it would be just as valuable if not more to leave college and join the air force which would get me a clearance, job experience, and good references all while they PAY ME. If I needed that degree after all, I could use the GI Bill to go to school.

Tell me about it. In fact, I would like to go back for my bachelors degree, but in my profession at this point in time the benefits, outside of personal enrichment, don't out weigh cost of time/money.

I think the idea is that higher education doesn't help some one gain intelligence. It will help you gain knowledge and ideas from others' point of view. You have to be intelligent going into higher education in order to see through educators' opinions and false facts that may be spewed.

At least those are my thoughts on it. (by the way, who were you referring to in your previous comment?)

Well, I don't have much formal education (I hate wearing a tie), but I am often amazed by the ignorance of "educated" people.

My sixth grade teacher had us diagram sentences. We'd go to the chalkboard in pairs and have races.

I'm not looking to throw anyone specific under the bus, just pointing out a rare instance when an argumentum ad hominem isn't a logical fallacy.

Education is important, however, I believe the schools are going about educating our children incorrectly, it has gotten progressively worse in the past years. I know a lot of "educated morons" that cannot do a lot of simple tasks. I am an advocate of education and experience, how much of what you learned in school do you use at work and your everyday life. If I owned a business I would hire a person who had 15 years of experience over a person with 3 years and a Masters.

I got a degree in Science / Geology in 1991, but my real education started around 1997 when the internet became a source of information.

I've almost unlearned all the BS I'd been indoctrinated with through years of schooling and stupid media :d

I got a Ph.D. but it doesn't say it is a "doctrine" anywhere on my diploma. :p

I wouldn't have gone this far with my education if it weren't for the fact that in my field that is the only way to get a job. I learned a lot more practical things on my own than my grad school ever teaches anyone. The other day I was looking for a book on building bbqs and didn't find it in the university library but found it at the Chicago Public Library.

The two subjects I studied in high school that I still use every day are French and typing. Everything else I either learned before or after high school basically.

how much of what you learned in school do you use at work and your everyday life.

How to make decisions with imperfect knowledge? Everyday. Understanding the vastness of what you don't know? Everyday. Application of game theory? Everyday. Effect of change? Everyday. You get out of education what you put into it. Sure there are morons with degrees. They would have been morons without a degree as well. If you walk out of college considering your biggest achievement/gain is a sheepskin, you would have been better off not going. If you walk into college expecting your biggest achievement/gain to be a sheepskin, you would be better off not going.
