Virginia Tech reports gunman on campus

Published: Aug 4, 2011 10:26 AM
BLACKSBURG, Virginia (AP) - Officials at Virginia Tech, site of a 2007 mass shooting, say a gunman has been reported on campus.

The university issued an alert on its website at 9:37 a.m. Thursday telling students and employees to stay inside and secure doors.

The alert says the gunman was reported near Dietrick Hall, a three-story dining facility. The dining hall is steps away from the dorm where the first shootings took place in the 2007 that left 33 dead.

The school says on its website that three young people attending a camp at the school reported seeing a man holding what may have been a handgun. They said it was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort, and that the man was walking in the direction of the volleyball courts.

And in a gun free zone? I'm sure they really mean it this time.

Good point. Why is there a gun in a gun free zone?

The Gunman didn't read the sign?

Personally, I don't believe it. I thought guns weren't allowed on their campus.

Do you suppose the cops will bring their sling-shot brigade?

Do you suppose the cops will bring their sling-shot brigade?

Yes, since the SWAT is too busy raiding the local farmer's market.

Speaking from experience there, VT literally shuts down campus at the drop of the hat ever since 2007, and any kind of scare is good media fodder. I'm about 99% sure this is a false alarm.....

Perhaps the gunman couldn't read English? Multi-language signs may be in order.

I thought the V Tech campus police were part of the task force that was raiding nearby towns' apartment complexes for Marijuana.

*gun free graphic*

That image is totally ambiguous. If I was a foreigner with subpar english skills, I might interpret that as meaning only handguns are banned? Or even that guns are "free" or even hey, bring any gun around ala: free-for-all. English is difficult language with lots of idioms.

For sure. That sign means no pistols. Rifles and shotguns must be okay ... not to mention bows and arrows.

One of the things I liked about the Army was that we got guns and ammo for free.:D

Yes?

Yes. Some of us who are more impervious to reason take things literally. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Now, how about knives and grenades?

Talk about an over reaction. I see people with guns on the UA campus all the time. No reason to freak out about it.
