Senate rejects House debt-ceiling bill

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Democratic-led Senate on Friday night voted to table, or set aside, a House Republican bill that would raise the debt ceiling and slash government spending. The Senate move effectively kills the House bill and paves the way for a vote on a similar Senate bill, as well as compromise negotiations about raising the debt ceiling. The Treasury Department says the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling must be raised by Aug. 2 or the government will begin defaulting on its obligations. The Senate vote was 59-41.

did this all go for the most part along strict party lines?
the Democrats in the senate sent Boehner a message?
how did Rand vote? was he joined by anyone else in this?

unknown. I was just reposting my breaking news push notice, as RPF's likes to be first among forums with breaking news speed was of the essence.

Well, what a total waste of energy that was. I love divided government - I hope they have a stalemate forever.

so they ask for a bill. THe house sends a bill and they reject it and keep talking about compromise. The socialist play a game as the media helps them play it.

This whole game, imho, was to get the real bill behind closed doors in a conference committee with only an up or down vote at the end.

It succeeded.

gunny + angelatc, thanks! the intense reaction to
this news is going to ripple thru the mass media.
dongkong, if there is any compromise that pleases
the hacks of both parties, mitch mcconnell writes it.
barack obama is going to be at the center of things.
any compromise consisting of ineffectual half measures
throws boehner + obama metaphorically under the bus.

The 59 to 41 vote, on a motion to table the resolution passed by the House less than two-hours before, ran mostly along party lines easily reaching the the simple majority required to sink legislation in the upper chamber.

Six Republicans joined Democrats to table the Boehner resolution were Sens. Jim DeMint (S.C.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Mike Lee (Utah), Rand Paul (Ky.), and David Vitter (La.).

But but this bill passing the house was supposed to be a victory for the gop and a slap at O. They'll likely just strip the parts they don't like, then pass it back down to the house, repubs vote against, then O claims leadership vs gop obstructionism. I truly think that ole Mitch and John are in on this with O and Reid. Why put up such a weak bill that was going down anyway? They could've played tough and or went for a Mack/Paul plan and then stuck it to O and co, then defended it all the way through purging O from office next year.

mcconnell's idea to give obama binary choises in terms of upping the debt ceiling has obama being very public with a hot potato during a tea party year. two words. trey grayson! mcconnell is semi-backing boehner as he plays into obama's JFK + FDR strong potus id. this is as dry afganistan starts to resemble LBJ's monsoon weather'd viet-nam. domestic entitlements + pentagon spending. guns + butter = the auld equation!

Graham probably voted against it because he plans to vote for Reid's proposal or something, lol.

Doesn't the Senate have to pass some sort of bill in order to take them both to committee and construct a compromised bill?

And how!!!

Would not mind seeing them all just call it a day and disbanding the union as well. They suck and I wan't them to stop meeting to talk about how they will spend carehn's money and how they will run carehn's life. Stupid idea that is being eaten by its contradictions.

The constitution has failed. Time to start from scratch I say.

they can't raise it if congress doesn't agree to it. if boehner doesn't pass a bill we're good!

Hatch felt the heat at CPAC from his yea vote on TARP. Looks like he's trying to rewrite his resume for his reelection bid.

The failure of this bill (as well as the Democratic version thats going to come up) is planned and expected. That why they can devise a worse bill that will screw us worse than both put together.
