Tea Party congressmen are behaving like uncompromising terrorists
To the Editor:
The debate over the debt ceiling has revealed to America what the Tea Party members of Congress really are terrorists. Terrorists, who instead of strapping dynamite to their bodies and threatening to kill innocent bystanders unless they get what they want, threaten to destroy the American economy unless they get devastating cuts to vital programs in the federal budget without a single cent in revenue increase via elimination of tax entitlements to the extremely wealthy.
And let's not kid ourselves, downgrading the credit rating of U.S. savings bonds would be devastating to the country and all of us. Just as terrorists, these Tea Party radicals refuse to compromise in the slightest, presenting the dilemma as their way or devastation.
In the country where I grew up, the United States of America, we had a political system, while not perfect, which was built on the principle of compromise and democracy. In this country, we argued our points, and then we voted and accepted the results win or lose. Blackmail was not part of the system. No one ever said, "Do what I want or I will intentionally hurt the people of America."
Sadly, this nation has been conquered and subjugated by zealots who don't believe in democracy and who would rather that the nation be damaged for years to come and we all be made to suffer than they compromise one iota. Even sadder, we try to appease these terrorists by giving in to their demands. Both John Boehner and Harry Reid have capitulated nearly completely to these terrorists, just as Chamberlain handed the Sudetenland to Hitler for "peace in our time."
If we give in to these terrorists, they will just repeat their tactics again and again. This isn't about Republican or Democrat. It is about American democracy and we cannot let a band of terrorists steal that from us.
