View Full Version : **Gage*** are you here? We need your consent on copyright for the Ames ads

Gage, we have a last minute immediate requirement for cleared copyrights on the Ames ads. If you go to the thread stickied to the top of the page you will see several are based on your pictures, since people assumed you would approve them, with or without credit, but in any event that they would be the best pictures to use. Could you please look at them and let us know what you need to clear them? The Pac is suddenly saying it won't take the submissions without PRIOR clearances, and even select the one it wants.

Thanks.

It is doubtful many people are around right now, Gage included. Many are at work and do not have access to the forums. All of this information and copyright issue will have to be addressed this evening at the earliest, more than likely.

If Gage does see this thread, my design uses a picture from his flickr and does give him credit. Which, if I understand correctly, is all that is needed given his past statements on the matter.

You may want to email him, Sailingaway.

d1sCo, I know he isn't here at the moment (who is is listed) but he comes on often, and frequently does so during the day, so I wanted the thread up. And yes, the credit is what he asks for, but some don't do that. He might allow it without in this circumstance, but in any event the PAC was asking for statements of clearances by the photographer, and some of the designers might not get on here until after Gage does. His pictures account for a number of the ads. But I agree, if it gives credit, it satisfies his 'some rights reserved' requirement of his flickr page.

Can we get this thread turned into a sticky so everyone will be sure to see it? Including Gage. (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?305653-URGENT-Need-Designers-Contact-Information-for-RevPAC-Ames-Ad.)

I don't have to be the one who gathers the info though, if a Moderator wants to do it, people might be more comfortable about sending their information to one of them.

Doesn't Gage mark his work with some statement indicating it's free to use?

He marks his flickr that it reserves the requirement to give him credit for the image. But some of the submitted ads (deadline midnight last night) don't do that. I think people figured that in some ads it would detract from the ad and in that case he might approve it, but now the PAC won't even look at them, apparently, without the copyright clearance. d1sCo's should be fine. As for emails, pming them here should work for the PAC, if that info can't be collected quickly enough, since it is how they created these to begin with. Michael would be able to get in touch with people. I think the work put in by the designers was clearly a gift for the use intended, by the terms of the threads. I'm pissed at the PAC, to be honest. They got a ton of free work and should be blown away by the results....assuming they look at them.

However, we have to do the best we can.

Is it okay to post/use a couple of these photos to promote Ron Paul outside this forum?
Gage: I only request attribution when you do so. :)

He has the below pic here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gageskidmore/5853537469/sizes/l/in/set-72157626882920857/

You can use them. Just put his name in small font somewhere.

It doesn't say they can be used. If you go into his flickr it does say to attibute the image to him if used elsewhere, and designers can do that, but some just haven't either because they were trying for a really 'clean' look, or they didn't know to.

So that means they can't run the ads that don't include attribution, unless he gives special permission to.

Is it really too late to do that?

I hate to do this but this is a PM he sent me which might serve as consent?

"The photos are licensed under CC-BY-SA, you are free to use the photos, as long as you put my name somewhere."

Thanks,
Gage Skidmore

Sorry Gage for posting a PM...

Seriously, what's the problem here? Can the RPAC people not just add his name to the ads?

Gage

My specific preference is to have some sort of attribution when my work is used, which is my only request, if it doesn't distract from the ad in some way that is. That is my only restriction in using my photos, otherwise you are free to use it for the grassroots ad. But if there is a problem with giving me credit, then I'm open to negotiation.

Appreciate the quick response. That should put everyone's fears to rest, that used one of Gage's photos.

Thanks, Gage. I think this is yours but it is older, and I don't see it on your flickr. Is it?

Hm. Thanks. Does anyone have any idea whose it is?

There are a lot of good choices, with Gage's stuff and the Getty stuff (which has a set price list) I just hate for people who did work on this not to even be considered just because they aren't here at this moment.

It seems all or most of his photos have this license attached: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.en

This version of it has a watermark on it, but I can't make it out. Anybody? http://www.amazon.com/Ron-Paul/e/B001I9TTX6/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0

That was an official campaign photo from '08, I'm pretty sure.

That was the first time I ever saw it, anyway. On the top of their website.

That would make sense. The Amazon info says it was provided by an official representative of the author.

It is on Mises too, without the watermark.

Couldn't find copyright but if the campaign owns it that could be tricky for the 'independence' of the PAC, possibly.

found this, completely apropos of nothing....

I don't like the colors, but that steely eyed look is sweet.
