Haven't heard hardly a word from him in weeks. And this in Iowa, while I know he has decides he is too far ahead in the polls to bother gracing us with his presence.

He has been surprisingly absent and silent during on the brink of the debt ceiling talks.

And a complicit media and a apathetic public give him a pass, and he keeps leading in the polls.

This is why I can't understand why anyone supports him. He wants to be president and he can't even weigh in on the most important issue of our times? He's scared of course, so he thinks by not saying anything he can appear to be above the fray. But it speaks volumes as to what sort of "leader" he'd be.

Very true. Maybe he thinks he is so far ahead that he can just take a nap at the finish line, but as we all know the tortoise beats the hare.

He's the kid playing dodgeball who plans to hide in the corner while everyone else is out playing.

It is quite simple really, the less a man makes declarative statements, the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.

Romney simply doesn't want to have to say or do anything until he absolutely has to, he is not a leader.

But still somehow gets voted MVP.

He's waiting on the polls to decide what to say on the issue.

It is a simple political calculation. Romney has nothing to gain no matter what happens. If he comes out for raising the debt ceiling, like he most likely would, and it passes, he gains nothing because it is unpopular and he will be seen as an Establishment politician handing out the backdoor deals. If he comes out for raising it and it fails or there is a long political slog over it, he also loses. Best to stay out of the spotlight. He's winning the race, no need to do something to potentially screw it up.

It's like in a basketball game and you're up by 25 in the 4th quarter. You could take all of your starters out and rest them (not taking an opinion on the debt ceiling), or you could keep them in and try to extend your already insurmountable lead and risk a potential collapse in more ways than one (taking an opinion).

EDIT: If what realtonygoodwin states is true, and I don't doubt it is, Romney is purposely staying out of the spotlight to avoid the above happening.
