LOL, this is a tweet he sent out about half an hour ago, getting passed around twitter a lot right now:

To those referring to "Tea Party hobbits." I'd rather be a hobbit than a troll. #WeThePeople http://twitpic.com/5x6693

Can someone explain this to me?

John McCain gave a speech on the Senate floor yesterday critical of the tea party in the debt ceiling negotiations and quoted a Wall Street Journal article referring to tea party people as "hobbits".

Wait.... Didn't the hobbits save middle earth?

Which one of the 2 do you think actually read the books? McCain or Paul?

McCain just reads scripts prepared for him by Kristol or Lieberman. Reading a book is out of the question.

Not sure, but I do know Aragorn supported Dennis Kucinich in the last election :)

Are the tweets and Facebook status attributed "officially" to Rand Paul - or was the person or people running that for him just having some fun?

It was him. He continued with the analogy during a conference call with reporters a few minutes ago.

Rand Paul on conference call responds to McCain's Tea Party hobbits" comments by saying hobbits are the heros in the book

Doesn't McCain know that being on the side of the Hobbits is a good thing? His own speech writers set him up, haha!

The implication is that Tea Party activists are nerds. It's the kind of thing that McCain, Giuliani, Bush and Romney would all get a good laugh out of.

Here's another example of why, if Ron Paul is going to delegate control of his online social networking to some immature staffer, he should make sure the staffer only refers to RP in the third person, instead of pretending to be him.

Ron Paul doesn't talk like that, and there's nothing to gain by making it look like he does.

Edit: Oops. I somehow missed that this was Rand Paul. Never mind.

No one on McCain's staff thought this was a bad idea?

From that^

Mr. Paul on Thursday snapped back that “I’d rather be a hobbit than a troll,” telling reporters on a conference call that “I think in reading the books, the hobbits were the heroes. They overcame great obstacles.”

Exactly as I surmised, Rand actually read the books.

Every time he opens his mouth, I love him more. That is the perfect response. Can't you just imagine how pissed McCain must be after reading that?

Did anyone see Rand on CNN today? Some douche from the Obama Administration came on after him and basically said "I can't reference the Lord of the Rings like Rand can" <grin>, basically a nerd dig against Rand.

I didn't care for the books or the movies; but they are some of the top grossing movies of all time now. Not exactly nerd-limited....
