incredible... guess what, military members serving in California have to pay out of state tuition rates.

LA Times has a detailed writeup(not giving Arianna and HufPo the traffic): http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-brown-dream-act-20110726,0,3203216.story

Following through on a campaign promise, Gov. Jerry Brown (http://www.latimes.com/topic/politics/government/jerry-brown-PEPLT007547.topic) signed a law Monday easing access to privately funded financial aid for undocumented college students. He also signaled that he was likely to back a more controversial measure allowing those students to seek state-funded tuition aid in the future.

Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), author of the private financial aid measure, described it as an important but incremental step toward expanding opportunities for deserving students who were brought to the U.S. illegally through no choice of their own. Cedillo is pressing ahead with a more expansive measure that would make certain undocumented students eligible for the state's Cal Grants and other forms of state tuition aid.

My girlfriend who came from a family that couldn't afford college was denied financial aid because she is not married, does not have children, is not a "minority", and has a father who did not want to release private information. She could not afford school because of this system.

And now this?

I know a ton of out of work desperate kids trying to get an education and make ends meet right now.

This isn't just in state tuition, they already get that, this is GRANTS. One problem is if your parents work under the table, they have whatever income they say they have, and these are 'need based'.

I actually really love California. I lived there for a few years while going to school. But with their tax rates and laws, I don't think I would ever want to live there. Some of my friends parents have some very successful companies, and I don't know why they stay...I don't think it's ever going to happen, but I hope the state breaks in two in the next ten years or so.

I want to say let them bankrupt themselves, but the rest of us might be forced to bail them out.

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jul/13/local/la-me-calstate-20110713

Cal State trustees raise tuition 12% + additional 10% = 22% in a year!

Board votes 13 to 2 in favor of the fee hike, saying 'the overriding importance is to keep doors open.' Meanwhile, Gov. Jerry Brown criticizes board for approving San Diego State president's $400,000 salary.

California State University trustees on Tuesday approved a 12% increase in tuition for this fall, saying the funds are needed to maintain student access and limit damage to programs and services after a $650-million cut in the university's state funding.
The trustees, meeting in Long Beach, voted 13 to 2 in favor of the hike despite the protests of scores of chanting, sign-waving students. Demonstrators urged the board to impose a one-year moratorium on raising tuition, which has tripled over the last decade.

The latest boost of $294 per semester comes on top of a previously approved 10% tuition increase for the coming school year.

Wow ya, I think the article I posted said tuition has more than doubled for the UC system. That must mean the state schools are starting to approach a similar price point, whereas they are not nearly as prestigious.

Yep... they all want equal graft and benefits! The salaries/benefits too, are getting ridiculous. This is where government influx of money and no defaulting skyrockets costs.

Education is an entry point into the economy for new money in the form of bank credit and government subsidy funded with new money borrowed into existence from the Fed. And the result predicted by the Austrians? Price hikes in the sector into which new money is flowing. Voila! And the really brilliant thing is that the banks have so inflated the cost of education that it is now almost impossible to get an education without borrowing from the banks. Hahahahaha!

I'm going to use a portion of this post in the comment section of the article I posted (I'm sure you don't mind)

Edit, here's what I posted:

Everybody here is looking at this from the wrong perspective. If you want to learn something about economics, listen up.

Education is an entry point into the economy for new money in the form of bank credit and government subsidy funded with new money borrowed into existence from the Federal Reserve. And the result predicted by the Free Market Austrian Economists? Price hikes in the sector into which new money is flowing. Voila! And the really brilliant thing is that the banks have so inflated the cost of education that it is now almost impossible to get an education without borrowing from the banks.

Remember when people used to be able to work a part time job or two, pay for their room and board and tuition? Sure, they were on a tight budget, but it was possible.. Now with government guaranteed loans it is not possible, everybody is forced to get a loan.

The only person running for President in 2012 who understands this is Ron Paul. He also wants to end our overseas empire and bring the troops home which would bring hundreds of billions of dollars back to the tax payers to spend on things like education. Hold your nose, register Republican and vote in the primaries Ron Paul 2012.
