Maybe this will make police departments think twice about using these deadly weapons.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A federal jury has awarded $10 million in damages to the family of Darryl Turner, 17, who died in 2008 after a police officer shocked him with a Taser.

Turner was arguing with his boss at the northeast Charlotte Food Lion where he worked in March 2008 when police were called. Surveillance video shows Turner arguing with a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer, who fired his Taser twice at Turner's chest, holding the trigger for 37 seconds and then for 5. An autopsy found that the shock sent him into cardiac arrest, and Turner died.

Turner's family won a significant settlement from the city of Charlotte, and then filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company Taser in March 2010. The second suit accused Taser International of failing to provide adequate warning or instruction about the stun gun to Charlotte police, creating an unreasonably dangerous condition the company should have known about.

Why would it do that? It ain't like they lost anything in the deal.

Read the article. The City had to pay too. And if judgments like these keep up, Taser will start making the departments responsible for the judgments. No company ever takes the brunt of liability. They always pass it onto someone else.

And the city and departments pass it onto someone else as well.....

Maybe a Taser gun will cost $20k each by the time it's over.

Yep. They don't have to pay, and the ones who do don't care enough.

Sounds like we'll need a tax hike so they can protect us.

It won't cost the cops who did the deed one cent. It will cost the taxpayers. The idea that punitive damages in civil cases causes reform of bad behavior is a myth perpetrated by the plaintiff lawyers who make a fat living off other people's misery and hide behind a false facade of Social justice. The lawyers get rich and the innocent pay the cost.

This is partly because the civil system was never intended to administer punishment. That is what the criminal system is designed to do.

Can't it be taken out of that police department's own appropriations? It was their officer so they should be accountable. No more free gas. No more ammo replenishment for a while, so you'll have to conserve, boys. No more fluffy toilet paper - use napkins. No more outsourcing building maintenance - fix the toilet and cover the graffiti yourself.

Maybe they'll just use their firearms instead? Seems like those shootings are always 'justified'. Plus I doubt anyone will sue Glock that they didn't adequately train police forces that using their product might result in death (then again, Glock doesn't claim their weapons are 'safe' either).

If you're a pig, the lesson is 'kill the mundane' with lead and you get a paid vacation. Kill with electricity, you get a paid vacation and some more training on how to use your less than lethal portable electroshock torture/killing device.

Hahaha! Silly mundane! Your fellow serfs are responsible for paying for our master's crimes. That's how it works in Amerika.

LOL That's like suing the gun manufacturer if a cop shoots and kills you. How did they even get money from the corporation? Sue the officer/department, not the company. LOL. What's next, suing the company that crafted a knife if someone stabs you with it?

Taser maker company and not tax payers will be picking up the tab if I'm reading it right. That's the way it should be.

If by "working properly" they mean occasionally killing people who didn't deserve to die, then they are working just fine, unfortunately.

Perhaps the real punishment will be from the bad publicity and increased awareness the general public will have regarding tasers.

Taser's are only used by governments, so they are a legitimate target. and a settlement adds to cost/price, so there should be fewer sold.

Lol. Right. Because government ALWAYS cuts spending when the price goes up. You really don't understand government contracting.
