If New Hampshire residents voted with their pocketbooks, the libertarian-leaning Texas Congressman Ron Paul would be the most likely challenger to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the Republican presidential nomination.
Romney, who has a summer home in Wolfeboro, N.H., has long been considered the frontrunner in New Hampshire’s first in the nation primary. He is ahead in every poll and has far outstripped his competitors in fundraising, both nationally and in the Granite State.
A Globe analysis of filings with the Federal Election Commission for the fundraising quarter ending June 30 found that Romney received $98,775 from 82 separate donations by New Hampshire residents – significantly more than any of his Republican competitors. (Some residents may have given multiple donations.)
But the next most prolific fundraiser, by a large margin, was Paul, who raised $33,095 from 74 donors.
No other Republican received more than 19 individual donations or raised more than $19,000.
