In November Ron Paul said that the vote on the debt ceiling is a litmus test of the Republicans:

Raising the debt ceiling does nothing but encourage more spending, both from Republicans and Democrats. They aren't interested in balancing our budget. They just want more room to borrow money, getting us into more debt until another time comes when we need to raise the ceiling again (because "the economy will crash if we don't"). That's why they can't be trusted with our money.
