This is hilarious! The TNG episode "Unification" combined with Ron Paul, you can't get better then that! The quote, "Leadership considers him somewhat of a radical, he has been an advocate of peace throughout his career." fits Ron Paul perfectly! The logic of this video is fascinating...

Ron Picard:

Gene Roddenbury was brilliant.

Here's the biggest problem: The "Prime Directive" and Gene Roddenbury were anti-trade. The clip of Picard talking about "interference" was meant to talk about how they couldn't even contact the "less developed" civilization, let alone offer to peacefully trade with them, to recognize the strengths of their culture and try to allow them to develop further with new technologies and resources that they could not develop on their own (at that point).

Roddenbury was anti-money, anti-trade, and anti-imperialist. Whenever he talked of "peace" he meant total isolation. Whenever he talked of the converse (of "contact", of "intervention", or of "trade") he equated it to imperialism and cultural wars, even if it was just voluntary trade or having a dialog about technology.

ST is a real mixed bag, I agree. In some ways it is really great, but in a lot of ways it is ridiculous. Roddenberry held a very poor understanding of both human nature, technology, and the relationship between them.

That said, I still enjoy it now and then.

PS: the vid was very clever.

I had forgotten the actors made this commercial that was spoofed in this video. It reminded me why I will never watch anything with Kutcher and Moore ever again.

Picard would be a Ron Paul voter judging from this clip:

http://youtu.be/keZlextkcDI

I have to admit, while the TNG Episode "The Drumhead" always felt like a well constructed episode that addressed a theoretical conflict that bore little meaning to the 90's..... after 2001-2011, this episode takes on a whole new meaning. I seriously get chills watching this. The original title of the episode was "It can happen here", signifying that even the Utopian Federation could fall subject to paranoia and subjugation of human rights.

Oh I dunno.... I always liked The Prisoner. I would call it something of more prophetic that ST and always raised the issue of human freedom.
