View Full Version : UFC Fighter Chris Lytle Considering Run for State Office in 2012

Looks like libertarian minded MMA fighter Chris Lytle is considering running for Indian State Senate in 2012. For those of you who don't remember, in 2010 he gave a shout out to Peter Schiff in his post fight victory speech asking the people of Connecticut to vote for him.

"As a fireman, he’s put out fires, and as a mixed martial artist he’s put out lights. Now UFC welterweight veteran Chris “Lights Out” Lytle is considering a 2012 run for the Indiana State Senate in District 28 or Indiana’s State House in District 53.

“I'm thinking about running because I feel we need new faces in there with the right intentions,” said Lytle in a press release issued Thursday. “My main concern is helping make Indiana a good economic environment for us and our children. I want to see if a normal blue-collar worker can make a difference.""

YYYEEESS!!

It's great having famous people come out in support of the liberty movement, it's even better when they decide they want to run for office because they don't need to garner popularity and media attention, they'll already have it!

Well said!

By the way, Lytle is fighting on VS at UFC Live 5 on Sunday, August 14th against a British guy named Dan Hardy. Let's all show Lytle some support for the fight. Maybe he has a twitter or facebook where people can give him a shout out.

Edit - The Lytle/Hardy fight is the headliner for this upcoming even too. If he wins and gives a shout out to Ron Paul, it would be amazing!

Good idea, that would be incredible. I wonder if Joe Rogan would react to that at all standing next to him holding the microphone. He would probably keep a straight face and remain silent, but we all know how Joe feels about Ron Paul ("he's a bad motherf***er (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?292250-Joe-Rogan-quot-Ron-Paul-is-on-the-f***ing-money!-quot&highlight=rogan)").

You're right. I was confusing Lytle with someone else. He's more of a submission specialist.

The great thing is, his next fight is on free (well, cable) TV, so we can all watch.

“That’s not how this should be in life. Until local people start getting in and normal people start get involved, we’re gonna have some huge problems.”

Although he’s obviously not a fan of the way the current two-party system operates in the U.S., Lytle does consider himself an “old-school” Republican, “like someone out of the 30s,” and would run as such.

Asked who he would identify with or maybe admire in today’s political climate, Lytle mentioned 2012 Republican Presidential Nominee candidate Ron Paul.

"There are certain things that I disagree with him on, but the one thing I like about him is no matter what, he’d never change. I believe what he says,” which is a key part of what Lytle sees in himself as a political candidate. “He’s a man of integrity and he stuck by his guns for the last 20-something years, even when he sounded foolish at times.

“He was never going to lie to people, he was never going to play the political game. That’s the type of thing we need.

“Right now people are just worried about getting re-elected and that’s all they’re doing. You can’t make real change when people are worried about that.”

If he is elected, the position is basically part-time, although he said he probably wouldn’t fight during the legislative session, which runs from January through April. The 36-year-old Lytle sees that as possibly the first time in his career that he might have an off-season in fighting, a chance to let his body recoup as he gets older.

“I had a couple of knee surgeries, had a lot of back problems. I’m always getting ready for a fight. I think it’s just slowly kind of taken its toll,” said Lytle. “My body could actually probably use the rest.”

Lytle doesn’t make a lot of promises heading into his possible candidacy, other than to serve with integrity.

“If I am fortunate to get in and people get rid of me in one term, that’s fine. I’m not gonna change what I do to try and get re-elected, I promise that.”

This may be a guy we need to encourage and support.

Can you imagine Dr. Paul endorsing a UFC fighter? lol That would pretty cool, and I bet it would go viral as well.

Now contrast that with McCain who tried to get the sport banned.

I'm glad he's going into the state legislature. It's the best way to start a political career. It establishes a small local constituency & is a much smaller bite to take for a first time candidate.

If he runs, he would be facing a 13 year or 23 year Republican incumbent in the primary.
