The state Senate and Assembly approved and sent the governor legislation that would ratify an agreement with other states to award electoral votes in the general election to the presidential ticket that receives the most popular votes nationwide.
The change would only take place if adopted by states with a majority of the electoral votes. So far, the interstate compact has been ratified by seven states including Illinois, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

If this goes through, it's kind of important....
Note that it's liberal states that are doing this.

Why in the world would California voluntarily give up their electorial votes? Understand small states doing it, but a big state, that's crazy.

F**k them all... unconstitutional as HELL. The electoral college was setup to avoid this type of crap. Its also part of the reason the Prez and VP cannot be from the same state. These jerks are trying to gerrymander the county. They are a bunch of leftist IDIOTS (sorry to be redundant) who will do anything to get their way. Vote these jerks out of office and take them to court... try them for treason!
This kind of crap nearly causes me to spit blood... twits!!!

I would find it hilarious if California gave it's 54 votes to the Republican because he won the popular vote. The leftists would flip out.

Personally, I consider the debate over the electoral college system to be a distraction. It results in the potential for something like rounding errors during tight elections.
Far more critical in my mind is the voting system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_systems) used per vote. It is largely because of our plurality voting system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plurality_voting_system) that third party and independent candidates have such a hard time getting into office, especially higher office. But people take that voting system for granted and focus all their attention on the electoral system or the ballot system (punch cards, electronic scans, digital, et cetera).
