View Full Version : Michele Bachmann Bachmann nearly scored a major victory with her pledge (by accident)

The Pledge (http://www.docstoc.com/docs/84064937/The-Marriage-Vow) that Michele Bachmann signed from the Family Leader is turning into a huge negative for her. Comedians and pundits from all sides are having a field day criticizing and satirizing this questionable pledge. But what if that Pledge had been slightly different?

Just today, at exactly the same time, NBC and CNN were airing stories that essentially were talking about the evil of pornography. A not so subtle reminder that prohibition of pornography, prostitution (and alcohol) tend to be left, feminist issues.

If the Pledge that Bachmann signed had stuck to a basic pledge of "faithful monogamy", and additionally referenced the dangers of pornography, prostitution and infidelity (for the benefit of the children!), it might have been a victory of epic proportions. The left would not criticize it, and it might actually bring Bachmann more support. The right would obviously be obliged to support it (imagine husbands across the nation saying "yes dear, I think that's great." :o).

Of course the addition of the racial and homophobic nonsense to the Pledge has completely eliminated any benefit she might have gained, but it was a close call. There's such a fine line between genius and buffoonery. By accident, Bachmann came close to scoring a big win.

(Caveat: This is in the context of the general public. Liberty-minded people know that prohibitions are expensive, counter-productive, and lead to the growth of government and a loss of essential liberties. The general public tends to look at prohibitions on a case by case basis, and like fads, support comes and goes.)

That was original Feminism of Gloria Steinem. Feminism has already progressed to Feminism 3.0.

Rick Santorum claims to still be happy that he signed it. He claims to still support it. Though, that's likely helping him. Before Bachmann got in the race he was known as the most socially conservative candidate and he may be happy to look even more socially conservative.
