Paul focuses on 'strong defense of personal liberty'

Throughout his talk Wednesday, Paul repeatedly mentioned the need to adhere to constitutional principles, which included ending foreign military operations like that in Libya and Afghanistan. He accused President Obama of using the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to perform an end run around Congress and legal requirements for military engagements.
“We cannot use force or bombs or buying with our money and tell other people how to live,” he said. “It’s not our business and most of the time it doesn’t help our national security.”
Paul also said reducing military engagements and unnecessary domestic spending may improve the quality of programs like children’s health care or Medicare because there would be more money available. Paul said he’d prefer to cut those programs also, but realized they’re too politically ingrained in Washington to end them.
“Yes, we may move toward a day where we have more local government and self-reliance and all these things and we should have,” he said. “But it’s much easier to cut spending for some of these things overseas.”
Many of those points resonated with Lamont’s Mitch Burington, who will be voting in his first election. Burington said he saw Michele Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican and Waterloo native, announce her campaign last week in Waterloo.
If it came down to the two of them, Burington said he’d support Paul.
“He reflects my views a little more,” he said.
