CNN has taken Eliot Spitzer’s “In the Arena” off the air, replacing it with “Anderson Cooper 360” at 8 p.m. in a shakeup that includes the launch of a new show with former CNBC star Erin Burnett.

The move strips the last remnants of the ill-fated “Parker Spitzer” off the air, six months after CNN parted ways with Kathleen Parker after a period of particularly low ratings. Ratings improved a bit after Spitzer went on his own with “In the Arena,” but clearly not enough to keep him on the air. “In the Arena,” as the Spitzer-only show was known, was pulling in fewer than 100,000 viewers in the key 25-54 demographic toward the end.

The shakeup also pushes "John King USA" and "The Situation Room" back an hour to make room for Burnett's new show.

"Parker Spitzer" was the brainchild of Jon Klein, the former president of CNN/U.S. who was fired just as the show was launching.

According to an internal memo sent out moments before the announcement, CNN is looking for “an alternative role” for Spitzer. But Spitzer's own comment, provided through his publicist to TV Newser, makes that role seem less certain.

I gotta tell you, I think this is a major mistake CNN is making. Elliot is a huge asshole, but he is a talented asshole. He gives tough interviews and is confrontational. He is the only thing I've seen on CNN that compares to Bill O'Really who has the highest rated show on cable news. What were they thinking getting rid of him without giving him more of a chance to grow an audience? It's like they demand instant results. Meanwhile Anderson Cooper has been on air for so many years, and I like him well enough but it's not like his rating are all that great anyway.

Just please tell me they are getting rid of John King - that show is awful.

Hopefully, the brainless fluff that Piers Morgan presents will be soon to follow.

CNN is a dying TV network. They are slowly declining more and more every day. It's just a matter of time before they disappear.

The problem is the show format and theme. We need a show like BBC Hardtalk, where the hosts ask their guests brutally hard questions and give them time to respond. Spitzer would have been a good host for that. I actually enjoyed seeing him spar with Ron and Rand.

Let em all die! And I say that as former Mass Comm student with a lot of aspirations of working for their affiliates.

Aww, so no crossfire with Spitzer and Weiner? I was for sure they were gonna give the two a show.

That and something like Intelligence Squared. It shows here on Bloomberg and is one of my all-time favourites. CNN is getting really dumbed down lately.
