SD plans "instant justice" for holiday misbehavior

Drinking on the beach this the Fourth of July could have more consequences than just a bad hangover — it could result in having to do five hours of beach clean up at 9 a.m. the next morning.
San Diego is testing out a new program called “Instant Justice” that would have people cited for minor infractions and misdemeanors this holiday weekend forgo being charged with a crime if they participate in community service on July 5 in Pacific Beach.
“This is a really great incentive for those committing these lower-level offenses,” said Regan Savalla, the chief deputy city attorney with the Neighborhood Prosecution Unit. “People can take responsibility for what they’ve done and give back to the community. It’s a win-win.”
Typically, individuals committing crimes such as littering, letting their dogs roam off leash or smoking in areas where it is not permitted are given the option to go to a Beach Area Community Court session for $40, rather than go to court and pay a hefty fine.
Gotta hate those "win-win" situations.
