CONWAY — Four years ago when Ron Paul ran for the Republican presidential nomination, the big bailouts of 2008 were still in the future and Paul, a long-time advocate for limited government, did not catch on with New Hampshire's Republican and independent voters.

This time might be different for 2012 presidential hopeful Paul, as the federal deficit soars, thousands of troops are still deployed overseas, and countries such as Greece teeter on the edge of financial collapse. As a congressman, Paul voted against the Iraq War Resolution and has been a critic of the Federal Reserve, calling it dishonest, immoral and unconstitutional.

Paul attracted a capacity crowd of nearly 100 at the Conway Cafe on Main Street Friday morning, where he stopped in during his northern New Hampshire campaign tour. Paul, who has called for the abolishment of the Federal Reserve, saying it is a threat to the country's long-term security and prosperity, did not make any remarks to the group as a whole, but spent the roughly hour-long visit shaking hands and answering questions. Judging by the amount of time he held each person's attention with his lengthy answers, those at the event were giving Paul serious consideration.

After talking with Paul, cafe owner Joe Quirk said he is not ready to commit to a Republican candidate because he wants to host each one of them at his establishment. But he's “on the top of my list,” Quirk said.
