:D

Attending a NYC-GOP social event, I had a talk with the Chair, Dan Isaacs. He had mentioned in his remarks about the need to let Obama know that NYC is not completely liberal, and that there are conservatives here. He wanted a "GOP Welcome wagon"...

So, knowing that one way to get in good graces with any org is to be helpful participants, I said that we might be able to do something...

We ended up coordinating a two stage plan. NYC Liberty HQ would attempt to get into the front-lines in Times Sq while the Metro Club folk staked out the high-end eatery where Obama was holding a $37,000 a plate dinner.

So, the problem for us was getting past the Advance Team (DNC Staffers who look like Secret Service, but direct crowds/etc to insure the best media "shots") and onto the front lines. To accomplish that we created signage that was easily transformed from Pro-Obama to ridiculing him.

BY the time advance found out what we were up to it was too late. Drove one of them nuts. He tried to send a few different cops to shut us down. But my answers were correct and "we had every right to be there"

Who is in charge? No one. We are independent citizens.
What is the name of your group? What group?
But, you are here together... protesting? Naw, we're not protesting, We're welcoming :)
Good, well you guys have every right to be here!

LOL - That convo was with an LT and everyone the advance sent after us after that I just sent to go talk to the LT...

No permits, and freedom prevailed.

Note that we placed ourselves right where the Motorcade made a turn

and directly in front of the news trucks where they were taping for broadcast

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/262298_10100264842096161_5001876_52275203_6503651_ n.jpg

Then, after marching around a bit through the crowds, having a few reporters stop us for their story,

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/261630_10100264815045371_5001876_52274730_231821_n .jpg

and generally just causing laughter in the streets, we headed up to where the Metro Club crew were stationed nearby O's dinner venue. Not as much action there, but they were glad to see us arrive and triple their numbers...

A good day in NYC, we had LOTs of pics snapped and video shot, might have gotten the signs into some news broadcasts (searching now), a few print interviews, and our local was GOP happy to see us.

A good day. I wonder if Saul approves :P

:)

I had painted the O logos the day before, it was a weird thing to have to do, in a horrible kinda way :p. The "jobs" one was to align with our Metro Club's messaging intent.

We added the x and the L's with 'window chalk' (which were remarkably hard to find here and the ones we found weren't the simple foam brush ones that I am used to)

Another wrinkle was the shirt I wore for the Times Sq. operation.

It is one of Ernie Hancock's campaign shirts from the last LP Chair election - LOVE not W.A.R. (Wayne Allen Root)

It REALLY confused the hell out of one of them lapel pin wearing bastards who tried to give us a hard time. I gave him an intelligent and polite "anti-war" earful (with a smile) and he had no clue which "side" we were coming from... :D

Yeah, transformer signs are a great idea, an advance man's nightmare. Live by the LOGO perish by the LOGO.

haha - and you would know :)

I'd also like to note that, in this case, "sign-waving" improved our standing with the Metro Club wing of our local GOP, while giving our volunteers something exciting and fun to do. A win-win example that, sometimes, "sign-waving" is a beneficial activity... (Of course, more important is attending your local meetings/socials, and all of the other traditional electoral activities)

Onward (and thanks for encouragement/rep, all)

I got to meet RPHawaii that day, purely by chance! I work in midtown Manhattan and because of King O's visit (at 5:00 mind you) all the streets east of 7th Avenue were barricaded so I decided to take a different route home - As I was walking down the street I saw the LOL signs and was cracking up to myself and when I got closer I recognized Mike immediately from the forums. I introduced myself and we hugged, he is a really sweet guy and it was great to meet him! I got home an hour later than usual because of the king (why couldn't he come earlier or later in the day so that people could get out?), but in the end I was happy to meet Mike so I guess I can finally thank obama for something.

Was great meeting you. A string of people were coming up with something to say, and when you stated, "Hey, you're [rph]. I'm Lisa from the [RPFs] and just chanced upon this..." I was stoked. Is great we met like that and I am always glad to meet fellow RPFers in person. After you left the crew was smiling and Katie simply said, "small world". We look forward to seeing you around. We're showing "An American Dream" on the big screen at HQ on the 27th. Doors are at 7p, Movie starts at 7:30. Is just a half hour movie so will socialize after, (and Dominic is thinking about a local mini-pubcrawl after/after, for those interested...)

On another note, people should know that I changed into a collared shirt while heading over to meetup with the Metro Club crew. ...All the worlds a stage...

You're talking about the local reps. Dean Skelos, etc. Yea, they have much to be desired.

Great graphic but would have been huch more difficult to get past advance onto the front lines...
