in part:

“I think our personal liberties are being severely undermined,” Paul said to about 40 people. “We have less freedom every day, and the government is overly burdensome.”

Paul, who spoke in Council Bluffs earlier in the day, proposed to remove jurisdiction from the federal courts and shift it to the state level instead, especially on matters of marriage, abortion and prayer in schools. He also pointed to his We the People Act, which went largely unsupported. The act would bar federal courts from ruling on cases relating to the exercise of religion, privacy rights, including sexual orientation and abortion, and marriage rights.

He said, “We’ve gotten into trouble socially and economically and foreign policy-wise by doing one thing badly, and that is that we haven’t really followed the Constitution.

“The Constitution was not written to regulate your life or your religion. It’s not there to regulate your economic activity, and it wasn’t written so that we could be the policeman of the world. It was written to restrain our federal government.”
