I think they're just a way of guaging where the support is among delegates of the party in a particular state at a given moment.

The primaries will be the real determination.

In our Utah Straw poll over the weekend RP came in second to Romney in the straw poll, almost entirely due to our efforts at the convention (which included a 50" TV which presented Republican delegates with RP's message on their way in).

RP came in ahead of Giuliani and McCain. The only thing left is to break Romney's death-grip on the state... and we will. He had no campaign presence at the event, he clearly is arrogantly showing that he thinks Utah Republicans will support him purely on the basis of his religious affiliation.

His religious affiliation as well as the fact that he saved the Olympics and acheived a legend status. Utah will be very tough to take from Romney, and the fact that he got 80% is a pretty clear indicator.

Its just another poll, but the word "straw' means that the public opinion is like straw blowing in the wind - that it is informal and can change, and does not elect anyone.

They are usually fundraisers for local parties but have no effect on the delegates awarded to the national convention.
