Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has ramped up his attacks on Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) amid talk that Chaffetz is preparing a primary challenge to the longtime senator.

If the congressman challenges the six-term incumbent, it would be one of the premier primary races of the 2012 cycle.

Chaffetz is a favorite of the Tea Party movement, which has made Hatch one of its top targets. He’s made no secret of his interest in the race, prompting criticism from the senator.
...
The atmosphere in Utah appears ripe for another insurgency. Now-Sen. Mike Lee (R) rode a wave of Tea Party support to beat Sen. Bob Bennett (Utah) in a battle for the GOP nomination last year.

I want to be clear that I have nothing against Mormons. However, it is clear to anyone who has been around Mormons en masse that they work collectively on many levels. With that said, it is my fear, and dim expectation, that Chaffetz is going to be taken aside by family, big Utah businessmen, and the highest church leaders and given a talk about the good of the collective and that he will stand down. After all, the LDS supports the one-party system with their tool senators Harry Reid and Orrin Hatch.

The success of Mike Lee may make that less likely. We'll see what happens.

I like Chaffetz a lot and would support him in the primary against Hatch. However, I just want to point out that Hatch isn't in the same category as Bennet. Hatch has had a fairly conservative voting record over the years.

He voted for the bailout.

He voted for the bailout.

Yeah, that's why I said fairly conservative. He's messed up on some votes.

Wrong-O

Hatch is on the wrong side of freedom legislation with disturbing reliability. He is a Traditional NeoCon.

i have to say he has been a fairly solid conservative other than a few big yes votes like the patriot act, war, and bailouts

other than that he has been spot on with someone i would want. i'd take Chaffetz over Hatch any day tho

I predict if Chaffetz runs, he will destroy Hatch on the scale of a Randslide.

I don't see how voting for those makes you a conservative, unless the lexicon of conservative = Neo-Con. The man voted for No Child Left Behind and Medicare Part D. Yeah, fairly conservative one you have there. /sarc

Yeah, that's why I said fairly conservative. He's messed up on some votes.

He's also a police state Republican to the core. I turned on him in 1993 or 1994 when I was 20 years old. The reason? He attacked Randy Weaver and said he belongs in jail, and said none of the federal agents in that case did any wrong. He's a thug.

I like Chaffetz. I really hope he wins. Him and Mike Lee will represent Utah very well.

I wonder what Romney will do.

Hatch should just retire; he is 77, would be 84 if re-elected.

there are more than just 3 or 4 votes. Sometimes they define you, but if you look at the thousands of other votes he's taken that aren't reported on...he does have a fairly conservative record if each vote on a bill is worth the same.

Whore N Snatch is going down if Chaffetz runs against him. Lee, the Pauls, etc will back Chaffetz, with a bunch of bailout fuddy-duddies backing Hatch.

dude is chopped liver if Chaffretz's team knows what they're doing. Like AED mentioned, he has LNCB and Medicare Part D, along with TARP and this monstrosity, the infamous DREAM Act:

Lee has stated in the OP's link that he will remain neutral.

Yeah, sure each bill being equal -- woo egalitarianism. It's like if someone voted for the entire New Deal, and then votes 'conservative' on trivial shit, he's fairly conservative? No, I don't think so. There's nothing remotely philosophically conservative about that if you define it as non-Statist in nature (Like I don't know ... Robert Taft). If Hatch is fairly conservative what does that make people like Grover Cleveland, Calvin Coolidge, Sam Adams, Ron Paul, or Frederic Bastiat....super duper uper- conservative? Hatch is a progressive through and through.

That's why people don't take the conservative label seriously because its laden with people on the far-side of each other when Ron Paul and ORRIN-F'IN-HATCH share the same label. It's why I refuse to call people like Bob CIA Barr a libertarian because he's not.

Plus, look who he associates with. McCain. You're right. His votes are highly dubious and on top of it, he hangs out with RINO extraordinaire.

WASHINGTON - Saying that on the one-year anniversary this week of the anthrax attacks on Capitol Hill the government is still unprepared to fight bioterrorist threats, Senators Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) today introduced bipartisan legislation to stimulate private sector development of new medicines, vaccines, and antidotes to protect against biological, chemical, and radiological attacks. The bill would create a comprehensive set of incentives for the private development of these critical countermeasures, including tax, procurement, intellectual property and liability components.

US Senator Hatch 35 year Elitist Aristocrat that is against the good of the people and this country. Hatch has been an accomplice to the dessication of the economy and people's standard of living.

It will be a landslide... I NEVER trust Freedom Works, but they have announced on Judge Nap's show, they are kicking Hatch out of office in 2012.
