This is what America is all about...I had lemonade stand when I was a kid..I made money to get ice cream when the truck came around or just bu baseball cards with. At least these kids are using the money for more noble purposes...BUT don't forget this is Montgomery County inside the Washington DC beltway and the county wants its $$$ first before it is going to let you make some money...what a JOKE.

Clearly the kids were doing it all wrong. Lemonade stands are okay, so long as they are not successful. Either that, or her kids aren't cute. I'm not sure on the take away message.

Jennifer Hughes, the director of permitting for the county, says it's technically illegal to run even the smallest lemonade stand in the county, but inspectors usually don't go looking for them. She said this one was unusually large.
...
But that did little to console Carrie Marriott. "Does every kid who sells lemonade now have to register with the county?" she asked the inspector.

"Cute little kids making five or ten dollars is a little bit different than making hundreds. You've got coolers and coolers here," the inspector responded.

They've been requiring permits for lemonade stands and garage sales for some time now. It is disgusting as all heck.

Government at all levels is out of freakin' control.

Extortion, pure and simple: “We only require licensing fees from kids if they make TOO MUCH MONEY.”

Notwithstanding the absurdity of this entire thing - can they really get away with fining the parents of kids who are running a lemonade stand?

Funny, that study on which states are the "most free" Maryland had a pretty bad score!

One thing you quickly learn when you are the victim of abusive government: Their chances of “getting away with it” are above 98% and your chances of defeating them are less than two percent. There is no better definition of “uphill battle” than fighting the government in court.

The number of guns that the U.S. government has means that it can get away with nearly everything. :(

These parasites on society will have their day. Good Lord, its for Charity! What a bunch of scum. Of course the said scum would probably reply, "The 9 year old should have known about applicable licensing fees and consulted a lawyer to apply for non profit status". Some times I just feel like screaming.

They need to make the fine $5000 and 30 days in jail for the parents... CPS take the kids to juvenile hall/camp for the summer.

These Marxist/Socialist zombie supporters need a good swift kick in the ass about government's totalitarianism and authoritarian repression...

This is why I am weary of the 10th Amendment. Sure, local gov't is far better than federal, but what's to stop crap like this from happening.

My condolences , maybe you could mail the county inspector a little note with some of your thoughts on the $300 license and $500 fine...

Then the kids should have known better and hired a high power lobbyist first.

That's depressing. :( I had a lemonade stand when I was 10-ish. Didn't make any significant money, but it was a good experience.

This is why I am weary of the 10th Amendment. Sure, local gov't is far better than federal, but what's to stop crap like this from happening.

If the Constitutional Checks and Balances were properly adhered to, you would not need fear your state gov because the Fed Gov could check the State Gov's abuse of authority that violates your life, liberty, or property, and vice versa.

"This balance between the national and state governments is of the utmost importance. It forms a double security to the people. If one encroaches on their rights they will find a powerful protection in the other. Indeed, they will both be prevented from overpassing their constitutional limits by a certain rivalship, which will ever subsist between them." -Alexander Hamilton
