Washington -- The Senate cracked Republican orthodoxy on taxes and undermined the once-impregnable political support for corn subsidies in an overwhelming vote Thursday to kill tax credits and tariffs for corn ethanol for the first time in more than three decades.

A combination of record corn prices, which are damaging poultry, dairy, cattle and hog farmers, and rising alarm over the chronic $1.5 trillion deficit forced lawmakers to take a second look at how the nation spends its money.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, a Republican, joined forces on an amendment to eliminate a 43-cent-a-gallon tax credit for corn ethanol that is paid to oil refiners and a 54-cent-a-gallon tariff that blocks more energy-efficient sugar ethanol, mainly from Brazil...

I wonder if this will end ethanol as fuel for awhile.

hopefully this will be the end of HFCS and the start of using normal sugar again.

Some people are going around calling these tax cuts "subsidies".

I consider this a net win because it also cuts the 54-cent-a-gallon tariff. I don't see why Norquist opposed this.

I read that this is attached to another bill that isn't likely to be voted on in the House.

Good . Totally foolish to use something in the food chain for fuel. Drives up corn prices , then in turn drives up beef , chicken.

This sounds too good to be true. Whats the catch?

"Normal" sugar is half fructose, so it is essentially the same thing and will kill you just as fast.

Even if half of HFCS products did not contain levels of mercury, it is still sweeter than normal sugar and is absorbed differently due to the higher fructose. I do agree that even normal sugar will raise triglycerides and cause problems with overuse. Stevia is the best sugar... all natural and low calorie!

Stevia is not usually just stevia. Might want to read the label to see what else they are adding (it does vary). Some may add real sugar or some may use artificial sweetners along with it. Whichever is listed first is the largest by volume.

It probably won't be voted on in the house.

Bachman is in the House. You remember, the House, where members are unelectable as president after being elected 12 times and with the biggest majority of votes in the country. Unless the media needs you to beat Ron Paul - in which case, a two term house member, or one that resigned in disgrace a decade ago is suitable presidential material.
