Ron Paul was late to the straw poll four years ago.
He was with his wife, Carol, when “all of a sudden my pulse went down and I was having a heard time breathing,” she explained to The Des Moines Register today.
It was Saturday, Aug. 5, 2007, the day of the big event. Ron Paul didn’t want to leave her side, but the medical staff at a Des Moines hospital reassured him that she would be fine while he traveled to Ames for the straw poll, a fundraiser the Republican Party of Iowa and a crucial first test of campaign strength and candidate popularity in the presidential nominating contest.

The next day, a Sunday, Carol Paul had emergency surgery. Dr. Robert Hoyt of the Iowa Heart Center installed a pacemaker, she said.
“And I’m here to tell about it,” she said with a laugh.
Paul finished 5th last year.

Today, he told a crowd in Dubuque to be sure to come to Ames Aug. 13.
“You’re a special state at a special time,” he told them.
The Pauls have five children.

“Three of them are doctors,” said Carol Paul, who was with two grandchildren today, Lisa Paul, who is in medical school, and Mark Pyeatt. “Our kids went into medicine not because we urged them to but because they saw how their dad took care of his patients.”
Asked how the campaign is going, Carol Paul said, “It’s early yet. It’s early. They like to see if they can ignore Ron because his message is so—it takes people’s breath away when he tells them what they’re really doing up there.”

That is really sympathetic, but she and Ron are the same age. I don't think it's a good idea to bring that up. I feel bad saying it, but his age will be a weakness in the campaign.

I think if anyone really tried using Carol's medical emergency as a stab at Ron, not only would that backfire major, the person who did would find themselves under fire for the remark.

Sweman, it's OK to say that age is a factor. It certainly is. Some GOP Primary/Caucus voters prefer to vote for a candidate that can run for a second term. According to the folks that I talk with, it's pretty known that there is little chance Paul will run for a 2nd term. His campaign knows about this and I'm sure they are working hard to make it seem not so bad.

Then again, people did vote Reagan in for a 2nd term so anythings possible.

It shows the kind of man he is. While other politicians have used such an opportunity to dump their wives, Paul was right by the side of his.

As far as his age is concerned, I venture to say that he is in better shape than anyone on that stage tonight.

Disagree completely, this is the kind of stuff that needs to get out there if we are ever going to increase Ron's favorability with women

To those who don't agree with me: I understand what you say and I don't even agree with myself wholeheartedly. When I read it it was a reminder to me about their age and I figured it would be for others as well. But I guess his age is nothing that can be swept under the carpet. We just have to accept it.

And to be clear. I absolutely didn't criticise his decision to stay with Carol.

On fire for the remark.
