Natural gas production is now booming, thanks to new methods of obtaining gas from shale stone.

Natural Gas — Yours for the Fracing (http://thenewamerican.com/tech-mainmenu-30/energy/7776-natural-gas-yours-for-the-fracing)

Wresting natural gas via fracing from tight shale formations a mile underground is one of man's greatest accomplishments, and one that promises abundant, clean fuel for a century or more.

It's certainly a big deal where I live. The gas industry is booming here. I personally know dozens of people who have leases on their property to test for possible gas, or are activley drilling, in marcellus shale deposits. It certainly has been a boost to our local economy. Gas companies buying real estate to house their equipment, many workers are out of staters and are living in hotels or renting apartments and houses. People have actually moved out of their houses in order to rent them. Many job fairs are held and locals are working at good paying jobs in the gas industry. Halliburton is a big one here. Constant advertising on the radio and local newspapers. However, there have been numerousl cases of contamination of water supplies, farm land etc. The rental prices have skyrocketed so your average Joe is being shut out of the rental housing market. Crime has escalated.

Still lots of questions concerning how this effects ground water, but I'm sure this is fixable. Aside from that I'd like to see natural gas become a viable alternate to gas automobiles. The US is lagging far behind other industrialized countries in having compressed natural gas (CGN) auto on the road. I believe there are now 5 states where it is legal to buy a new CNG car. 3 years ago it was only NY and CA. I hope the free market adapts to the new supply of gas and we stop shipping so much money to the Middle East.
