Here's an even better way to persuade people to buy fuel efficient cars - Actually produce and sell them.

Cars had just as good (or better) mileage in the 80's as they do today.

yeah, the whole thing is completely asinine. i drive a 1993 beater honda civic hatchback. i average 36 mpg. in a 17 year old car. that i paid 1200 bucks for. and people think they are getting a 'sweet deal' when they pay 12k for a 2011 that only gets like 32 mpg. is the 2011 nicer? sure. does it have anything that my car doesn't (or can't put in it if i wanted to)? no.

we were making cars almost 20 years ago getting the same gas mileage as most places are manufacturing now. cars now should be getting in the 40's-50's... look at european cars.
