Raising a glass to Ron
Barkeeps hail 'no-tax' tips

There's one congressman who will never have to pay for a drink in Manhattan.
Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning Republican presidential candidate from Texas, has become an unlikely hero among bar and restaurant workers as he fights for a bill that would end all taxes on tips -- the bread and butter of bartenders and waiters.
Last Thursday, a group of Paul's Big Apple supporters, called the Ron Paul NYC Liberty HQ, held a Manhattan pub crawl in support of the legislation.
"It's just not right. That money is supposed to be a gratuity for [the workers], not for the government," said Dominic Inferrera, 38, a volunteer with the group.

This is the kind of thing that grassroots should be doing. The campaign is going to be taking care of typical campaigning. Much of what grassroots wants to do the campaign already does. But special projects like a bar crawl the campaign is not likely to do.

If you go out to eat, tell your waiter about H.R.1139 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112:h.r.1139:). If they are interested in getting their tips tax free, they should call their congressman and tell them to support the bill!

Leave a card with this info when you tip somone...

You know that's a great idea! You could hit everybody in the restaurant with one card! You better believe they'll share THAT info with their co-workers! Something like, "This tip is supposed to be for you because of your service, not for the government - If you agreee, support Ron Paul's bill."

What a nice, easy way to get his name out there to folks who probably don't pay that much attention.
(Just don't be a lousy tipper when you do it.)

It OUGHT to be unlawful, but unfortunately (just ask any waitress/waiter) tips are indeed taxed. What's worse, at least as I understand it, the
IRS *assumes* that wait staff are making at least 15% in tips. A while back, the IRS was pushing hard to have restaurants keep track of the total
tab for each waitress based on sales, and the waitress would be expected to pay taxes on 15% of the total sales tab. In other words, if the customers were tightwads, the waitress could end up getting taxed on tips that were not even earned. I'm not sure if this law ever went through or not.

Regardless, it would be really good to have some cards or slimjims to pass out to wait staff. Anyone with design talent on this yet?

Good, but they doesn't say that he's a presidential candidate, and they could be smaller.

The strategy here is to seed his name without "selling" a candidate. Lots of reasons for this, including getting the press interested...

This ad targets 392,860 users:
who live in the United States
age 17 and older
who like bartender, bartending, waiter, waiterbartender, waiters or waitress

Any suggestions on ad or page would also be appreciated.

This seems like a really good recruiting area for us. We should try to repeat this in other places. Plus, wait staff and bartender types are naturally pretty social and probably likely to help spread the message if we can get them on board.

Living in korea has taught me to never to tip again, why the fuck are we tipping these assholes anyways? Isn’t it part of the job to serve? But my biggest problem with tipping is that, people expect a tip and they give a mediocre service.

for example a hair salon in south Korea, I walk into a hair salon to get my hair cut. The person at the door greats me and grabs my coat to put it into an individual locker. I didn't have to take off the coat, they did it for me after this they hand me the keys to open the locker so no one can open it. Then they prewash my hair (really good by the way). While I’m waiting for my hair to be cut, the barber’s assistant comes and gives me a "hand massage". Then after the hair cut, they wash my hair again. After the whole thing they went and grabbed my coat and put it on for me. They would not let me do it myself.
All this service for 12,000won which is about 11.50 dollars and remember you never tip in korea.

Another thing, the food delivery is great here. You can order a 4,500 won item which is about 4.10 dollars and they will deliver it to you without a delivery charge nor a tip.
I think we should change the tipping guide lines. If the person goes out of their way to provide an extra service then yea tipping should be fine. But if the asswipes are just doing something the job requires I think we should not tip them.

sorry i'm just mad at all the times i tipped because i'm living in south korea.

As an avid reader of the forums for the past several months, I have decided that this is the perfect opportunity for me to help restore the republic. The "Tax Free Tips Act of 2011" is a genius piece of legislation that needs to be pushed and catapulted into every restaurant in the country.

This Friday, I am mailing a letter to every restaurant in my city, Danville, Virginia. I am simply stating that every restaurant needs to be contacting their congressman and get this pushed hard. I am also including a PDF http://www.maresco.us/wp-content/upl...-Act-Flier.pdf These will be pre-cut and on very nice card stock. My hope is that restaurant owners will at least make these available to their employees. This is a win win for waiters/waitresses/busboys/bartenders and restaurant owners.

Maybe this idea will allow others to follow suit and get the word out. This could help resonate much positivity into the campaign and help Dr. Paul gain a ton of momentum with new younger voters.

The Ron Paul NYC Liberty HQ conducted a tax-free tips event at the renowned Natives Restaurant - Theater - Bar in Queens to promote federal legislation that would exempt gratuities from all federal income and employment taxes. The bill would affect bartenders, servers and workers of other occupations whose tips are currently taxable according to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) criteria.

...

"As a proud American of Colombian descent, I am deeply appreciative that Dr. Paul promotes initiatives that, once enacted, will bring needed relief to overtaxed, overburdened workers in communities like Jackson Heights, Queens," said Pierre Alcantara, referring to Congressman Paul as "doctor" because Dr. Paul is an OB-GYN by trade who personally delivered 4,000 babies.

"Now is the time for Hispanic Americans and others to remain engaged on this issue of tax-free tips so that millions of workers get immediate, significant relief. In Washington, we have a costly federal government that bails out its union and corporate cronies but never assists middle-class households. The situation as it stands is wrong", added Pierre, who is the Ron Paul NYC Liberty HQ visibility coordinator.

...

The response to tax-free tips advocacy has been remarkable. Other grassroots supporters of Dr. Paul now are emulating the Ron Paul NYC Liberty HQ's tax-free tips pub-crawls in New Jersey, New York's Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Orange County, California, St. Paul, Minnesotta and Atlanta, Georgia. With respect to tax-free tips legislation advocacy, the HQ also has inspired activists in the important Republican presidential primary states of Iowa and Nevada.

It is almost impossible to track cash tips and these folks will be able to make their income appear small to the IRS man. Thus, it will be difficult to overcome the mindset of free Obamacare.

ronpaulhawaii
07-08-2011, 03:27 PM
The IRS estimates cash tips and the servers are liable. That means if you work in a dive down the block from a 5 star your taxrate on cashtips is disproportional; unfair.

Secondly, as we move to a digital world the servers are getting squeezed. They know exactly what we are getting on about. Soon we will begin subtly educating customers.

Finally, most people do not agree with the "mandate" and are no longer fooled by Obama's charisma...
