Yeah, that is what I thought...also wouldn't the SIM card be ruined by putting it in your mouth?

The article mentions it is an HTC EVO phone.

Anyway I posted this because the incident is real, check out the Youtube above

Sim card wouldn't get ruined in your mouth. I've put my phone in the washmashine, took out the sim card and put it into a new phone and it was fine. (phone even worked after a good blowdry). The thing is...i think sim cards can only store about 128 bytes...I'm sure the article meant to say he took out his memory card (probably a micro-SD card) and stuffed that in his mouth...those can hold up to 64gb and are half the size of a sim card.

says sim card for me:

But what they didn’t know was that Narces Benoit had removed the SIM card and hid it in his mouth, which means the video survived.

Key point here:

Miami Beach police did their best to destroy a citizen video that shows them (police) shooting a man to death in a hail of bullets Memorial Day.

And AF didn't get the chance to post this thread first.

Yup.
Must have shaved off the "l" . fixed it.

They say the only reason they were able to show the video to a reporter is because they hid a memory card after police allegedly pointed guns at their heads, threw them to the ground and smashed the cell phone that took the video.

www.qik.com

stream live video directly from your phone to an account online. The video saves automatically, and once the stream is finished it posts the completed video to youtube. I think you can set youtube up to send out an email or tweet every time you upload a new video.

No matter what happens to your phone this info is out there. For families, you can have an emergency youtube account that only gets videos uploaded if someone was in a "situation". Gotta be smart people.

*Qik lets you post to Facebook now, too. Lot's of social networking options.

Police make up a story, what's new?

AndrewD

I rarely seem to hear anything about internal affairs (and their actions) on these type of criminal police activities. We need to start acting as liasons between the local media and the internal affairs branches. The report of the initial crime ... while some may say is educational ... is simply not enough. Every story like this should have a follow up report, posted from internal affairs documenting the summary of the investigation and the punishments imposed.

That way we can see that these issues are being handled on case-to-case bases.

let me guess there is going to be an internal investigation and if the media keeps pushing the might slap a few officers on the wrist... yay for being able to investigate yourself.

Which is why getting a Citizens Review Board is a good idea for any locale.

This.

And actually, Miami has one. and supposedly a good/strong one.
Here is an article about it that came out just 1 day before this incident.
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2011-05-29/news/os-ed-cops-gone-wild2-052911-20110527_1_civilian-review-subpoena-power-sanford-cops

Outraged Miamians that November overwhelmingly voted to form a civilian review board. One with bite. The panel, Florida's first, had the juice to take police misconduct complaints, subpoena sworn officers and launch probes.
...
Today, Charles Mays, independent counsel for Miami's Civilian Investigative Panel, believes Miami Police internal investigations are better because police are "now in a circumstance where they know that an independent agency is looking over its shoulder and asking questions, and when necessary, doing its own investigation."

It's the sort of glass-house policing that builds public trust. And it's the kind of bedrock accountability that Central Florida residents ought to cry out for after a recent rash of gray-area incidents. Not that we're suggesting Greater Orlando mirrors Miami then or now (the Justice Department is probing seven fatal shootings by Miami cops since July, including two unarmed suspects).

So this might just be a good test of their review board.

Removed SIM card? Since when does a SIM card store videos?

You can direct a phone to store a video to the phones built-in memory or to the external device. Not sure if all phones allow it, but mine does.

Police statement:

... in the course of the investigation, we received reports alleging that police officers confiscated a phone from a civilian bystander in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Any and all video of the incident is crucial to the investigation, and it is not unusual for police to secure any video that may have evidentiary value. Several other phones were also secured during the course of the investigation.

"Contrary to Mr. Benoit’s statements to the media, the cell phone turned over to the Miami Beach Police Department is in working order; the only damage observed to the cell phone is to the lower right portion of the LCD screen and it is unknown when this damage occurred. This damage does not appear consistent with Mr. Benoit’s statements to the media that his phone was "smashed."
