OBAMA! OBAMA! OBAMA!

Techdirt reports that Senate bill 978 – a bill to amend the criminal penalty provision for criminal infringement of a copyright, and for other purposes – may be used to prosecute people for embedding YouTube videos.

According to Mark Masnick, if a website embeds a YouTube video that is determined to have infringed on copyright and more than 10 people view it on that website, the owner or others associated with the website could face up to five years in prison.

Read Masnick’s article here. He explains how the new law would expand copyright violations from reproducing and distributing to performing – including streaming video over the internet.

It's almost comical. People are going to watch in real time right before their very eyes exactly how incremental statism works. It's not going to take a century to accrue super sized internet regulation like it has in the brick and mortar world.

You take something like the internet where everything is voluntary. There is not one thing about internet that is not voluntary. Furthermore, since everything on the internet exists only in a digital universe there are no real threats to anyone from the internet. Every user consents with every single click yet a vocal minority of users who refuse to take responsibility for their own clicks want internet socialism.

I am reviewing my position on free speech. Maybe Rand would consider proposing some unprotected speech legislation that would criminalize bitching about not taking responsibility for your own clicks. :)

How about a new law that would prevent others from creating more laws?

Senate bill 1776 – a bill to amend the criminal penalty provision for criminal infringement of any personal liberties, and for other purposes – may be used to prosecute for oppression.

If I were in Congress I would issue a bill that would require the FBI to whack all my opponents with a rubber chicken every second Tuesday of the month at 5:13 AM.

It sounds ridiculous, but hey, when in Rome...

With a corporatist government, it makes perfect sense. This law is written by mainstream media and entertainment companies (including sports). It is then proposed, sponsored, and voted for by paid whores in the Congress. The bonus side effect is that it will then be selectively enforced, and it will expand to be used for political reasons.
