Roger Ales and Rupert Murdoch screamed copyright; youtube (Google) caved, and all Freedom Watch and Stossel eps were taken down

That sucks. Haven't they learned anything from the demise of the music industry? People are going to find ways to distribute your content online, like it or not. Work it into your business model, don't force it out!

news channels charge cable companies 30c to 50c per month per subscriber.

so a program, placed on a torrent site by the news channel, with advertising, would easily bring it that much. no one wants to download or watch on youtube but some cable systems just don't offer some channels.

IP Sucks! Abolish it!

YOU KNOW WHAT? Yes it does! I have finally gotten off that fence for good. Down with the IP monopoly's!

its not IP but the extreme way it is now enforced.

xeroxing an entire book is wrong, xeroxing 6 pages should not be
selling pirated DVDs is wrong. downloading a 50 year old movie should not be
downloading news programs that will never be on DVD, or any programs shown on free TV should be public domain.
selling fake Mikey Mouse shirts is wrong; using Mikey in a HS play should not be.

The problem with IP is that it's ownership of ideas. Ideas are infinitely reproducible and therefore we don't need the rule of property to determine who can use an idea.

Here's a whole short PDF book about it: http://mises.org/books/against.pdf

It can be taken way too far though. I fervently disagree with the practice that some seem to think is A-OK, which is to post an author's brand new book on the internet for all to download for free. If that author wants to make their new book available for free, they will do so.

“Luckily”? I just spent 10 minutes trying to figure all that download stuff out, and then gave up without seeing the video.

IP law is a very interesting concept.

I generally refer to Locke when dealing with property matters, but here he can be taken both ways. Adam Smith has also taken both sides of the issue. I think Jefferson really nailed it best.

There's really no such thing as a right to an idea that you have shared. Once you've shared an idea, it's like releasing a product you have created into the ocean - You can no longer claim rights to it. That being said, there are utilitarian reasons why Intellectual Property should be protected on a limited basis. You don't have a right to it, but there should be some acknowledgment of where the idea originated.

I also don't think it's ok for anyone to do that, but legality and morality are different things. In my view, the role of government is only to protect life and property, and IP isn't property.
