NEWARK — When Newark police encounter a vicious or injured animal, policy states they can shoot it. But two families question whether their pets were treated properly.
Justin Hall’s golden Labrador-shepherd mix, Sophie, was shot multiple times by a Newark police officer who thought the dog was going to bite him May 8 on South Fifth Street.
Newark Division of Police permits officers to shoot animals domestic or wild, to prevent their suffering or to prevent imminent physical harm, Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow said.
