My kid sister was a big Twilight fan for a while (before the movies) and wanted me to read it. I really tried; but after about 50 pages of the protagonist whining about her problems to no apparent end, ruminating on how tough it is to be a pretty, white high school girl on the West Coast, and generally being the kind of emo downer I've disdained and avoided enough in my real life to even think of letting them in to my escapist time, I tossed the book aside in utter disgust.

Don't get me wrong; if this book persuades kids who avoid reading like the Plague to finally engage themselves in a piece of writing and find out how much fun it can be, I think that's a great thing. But I hope at least a few of them will see their tastes mature and spur them onto far more rewarding avenues of literary adventure and/or horror, like O. Henry, Stevenson, Orczy, Twain, Dumas, Poe, Lovecraft, Machen, etc. Heck, if they only go on to read other canonical vampire novels, that's fine too, as long as they're reading something that engages them.
