View Full Version : Bald Eagle symbol should go

As much as I loved the majesty of the eagle and feel it is almost sacrilegious to mention this. But the eagle is a bird of prey and kills the weak to live. Just as USA has been doing in it's whole history but for the WW's. Almost every conflict USA had was against the weaker and generally the defenseless. From the Indians to the armed incursions to the CIA involved assignations and overthrow of legit governments of 3rd world proportions. Maybe that bird of prey subconsciously allows people to except this preying on defenseless gov. like Iran. We should change our image and send the world a big message, this goes along with what Ron wants to do with minding our own business.IMO:)

The American Bison is more indigenous to the USA and it is large, powerful and only kills when threaten, it doesn't kill to live. But it can be bad ass and able to leap barbed wire fences. Not bad for a one ton animal. There isn't an eagle that can touch it.

Bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to the various U.S. and Canadian National Parks, especially Yellowstone National Park. Although they are not carnivorous, they will attack humans if provoked. They appear slow because of their lethargic movements, but they can easily outrun humans—they have been observed running as fast as 35 miles per hour (56 kilometres per hour). Between 1978 and 1992, over four times as many people in Yellowstone National Park were killed or injured by bison as by bears (12 by bears, 56 by bison). Bison also have the unexpected ability, given the animal's size and body structure, to leap over a standard barbed-wire fence

or maybe we should have gone with Ben Franklin's idea of the turkey?
they are smart, cautious, and have been known to be quite intimidating when threatened. sure why not? and what with the obesity rates rising, we would truyly be the nation of "Butterball" turkeys.

I also dislike the eagle as our national mascot.
not only does it kill the weak, but it also steals prey from other animals.

I would much prefer something more humble... maybe a chickadee, for example

Yeah, as a practical application of our time, obviously not the best idea. But, if you don't like the bald eagle as a symbol, who's to stop you from using whatever creature you choose as your own American mascot. Perhaps in the great free market of ideas, it will eventually catch on.

I'd like to add, that I'm as anti-government as the rest of you on here. But, crapping on the U.S. for what has happened in the past, ie: dealings with Native Americans, overly aggressive foreign policies and meddling, civil war, etc. etc. There simply is no country on earth that is free from this kind of stuff. We've all done something wrong, and if you go deep enough into the dark corners of mankind, you'll find something terrible wherever you look, no matter where on earth you are. Ok, maybe not the north or south poles. ;)
There is nothing unique about America in this respect, and there is nothing "intrinsically American," about the bad things the U.S. gov't has done in the past. The point is not to continue to point fingers, or to feel guilty about the country you live in - and I'm sorry but as Americans, we still have the best deal around whether people accept it or not - the point is to learn from our mistakes and move forward.

Agreed, I don't feel guilty about any of it since I didn't do it but it is important to learn our history so we don't repeat it and I thought a non predator would send a good message.

"The Gorgol" is a Pixiesh creature from olden times. It is deadly.
The elders use to call it "The Thing That Should Not Be". It is very quick on its feet, and as you can see, it has flight capability (that it uses to deadly effect). Its attack is ferocious, though it is slightly dull-witted.

I feel that this would be an awesome symbol of justice and power.

We were just talking about this the other day, yes the eagle is a poor choice, ask an alaskan what they think about eagles, they are a menace up there...

I also love bison... we were around them growing up and while wild bison can be dangerous I have never seen an agressive bison in captivity. if they are raised from babies on a farm they are very docile, and a lot like dogs (they follow you around and lick you)

i also like manbearpig too :D

2,000 or more of them showed up at Ron Paul's Rally at Ann Arbor.

They are cagey, pretty much keep to themselves unless threatened. They also take on larger animals and usually win.

I think the bald eagle was suggested by Native Americans. It's beautiful, powerful and has command of the skies. It's aggressive alright, but if I had to choose another animal it would be the Wolverine. It doesn't rule the forest, but there's hell to pay for messing with it.

The Wolverine was also the mascot for the patriots in the movie, "Red Dawn." So there's the patriotic tie in.

Ben Franklin on the Bald Eagle:

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country . . .

"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

The eagle shows our status as the most powerful country in the world. A bison is just fat.The eagle almost went extinct just like the Bison, it doesn't have that much power to stop it's own destruction. What would you rather have attack you without a weapon a eagle or a bison on the open range? Which one would be easier to kill with your bare hands? Which one preys on the weak and defenseless?..The Bison has 1000x the strength of a eagle.

As far as the wars goes to show you, when legitimately attacked we're so strong, we just prove how the US had the power to prey on the weak. As Ron says he wants the power to resist doing such things.
