Will be interesting to see what becomes of this, although I have doubts TX will fight the Feds.

When it comes down to it, if We Texans really push, they will sacrifice their pet Rick "The Hair" Perry in some illegal but somehow legal political move to kill the bill.

AdamT

That's what I was thinking too. Since the passing of the bill ultimately comes down to Fairy Perry signing it, this was unlikely to ever pass.

What I want to see is Texans go berserk on their legislators and force their hand into a fight.

Dang it. I'm up to my eyeballs packing up my apartment. I'm torn here. I'm less than 4 miles away from the Capitol but this is pretty much my last day to out of this apartment and done moving.

Just find a couple of folks with Ron Paul t-shirts, explain your situation, and have them come back and help you pack after the visit to the Capitol.

Alex Jones seems to be embellishing the issue a bit; but if it motivates people, so be it.

I mean, they say only 3% of travelers ever get the full hands-on search, so his theatrics need to be toned down a bit.

HOWEVER:

If they can do it to a few and get away with it, they'll eventually do it to all of us. That should be Alex's focal argument.

He did go down...

Alex Jones — a man best known for claiming the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks were an inside job and hosting Charlie Sheen’s phone-in program of choice — led a group of about 100 people, initially, to the wrong chamber as they protested the failure of the anti-pat down bill Wednesday afternoon.

After discovering their error, they left the House and headed over to the Senate, the chamber the measure is stuck in. There, Jones claimed that the state senators had sold out the country to foreign banks, were “enemies of the Republic of Texas and the Republic of the United States” and had sided with “King George III.”

As the small crowd listened to his speech — some of them wearing t-shirts that declared, “911 was an inside job” or “Live Free or Die” and they held signs that exclaimed “NO TSA Gropers” — several of them followed the radio host in chanting “resistance is victory.”

Jones, in a shrieking voice, complained about TSA officials of “groping children.” He also complained about the “new world order.”

Cross then implored the crowd to go to Senators offices and “tell their little boyfriends” (who are, apparently, blackmailing the Senators about their sexuality in order to prevent them from acting in the interest of the nation) to vote in favor of the ban on pat downs.

When asked about the demonstration, Sen. Dan Patrick said that he was pleased that Texans had turned out to protest the failure of his anit-pat down legislation, but said that Jones was in no way affiliated with him.

“I don’t know who Alex Jones is… No idea,” Patrick said.

Later, Jones led what had almost become a mob from the Senate to the House because one of Jones’ supporters said that a member of the House staff hadn’t expressed concern about the pat downs.

One of the members of the crowd identified one of the doormen who stand of the House, who are typically instructed not to say much of anything to people, had made the remarks.

Jones and his cohorts, then proceeded to chase the doorman around the capitol dome and then yelled at the young man for the offense of not showing great enough concern for their cause.

“You think we’re your slaves,” Jones yelled at the doorman.

“You think you’re going to use big government to have your way with us, you parasite?! You’re going to be defeated!,” his yells devolving into screams.

He promised to bring 50,000 people to the Capitol next time.

That's about how I figured things would pan out. I'd rather put up with Alex Jones, annoying as he may be at times, than TSA gropers, but there's a way to get your point across without excessive hyperbole.

Isn't that 3% equal to 100% of travelers who reject the naked xray scan?

Possibly, I might have misunderstood that. Still, I really wouldn't go with Alex Jones's recommendation of 'going to your congressman and telling him that you or your family can't fly because someone is going to touch your junk', particularly when the odds of you being pulled aside for a full search are so low.

I'd stick with arguing for the 4th Amendment, without the theatrical turn-offs. But, it seems it may be too late for that. This is one of those Alex Jones moments where you ask yourself, "Okay, did that help us, or hurt us?"

EDIT: But, as I said earlier, I'd take an annoying Alex Jones over an elitist TSA agent any day of the week.

Meh, consider that the "Boston Massacre" really wasn't, and the tax on tea amounted to about 1%.

And most cops do a good job.

But the Alex Jones' of the day, got the job done.

Successful agitprop is successful.

Points taken. There's a role for Alex Jones, and Thomas Jefferson, as critical as he was of newspapers, had this to say, with which I agree wholeheartedly:

"If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn't hesitate to choose the latter."

You could easily adapt that by replacing 'newspapers' with 'Alex Jones.'

I just don't know if this was . . . well thought out. I mean, if only 12 TX congressmen backed out, it might not have taken much to get them back on board and bring this bill back to life.

But now . . . eh, I don't know.

That's only because most people have knuckled under and gone for the naked body scanners. If you go to an airport that has the full body scanner and you opt out you're getting patted down. Back in November/December/January the TSA backed off thanks to WeWontFly.com. But now they are in full force. Also "they" are lying their butts off on the statistics. So no, he shouldn't tone it down. It needs to be turned up.

HOWEVER:

If they can do it to a few and get away with it, they'll eventually do it to all of us. That should be Alex's focal argument.

People don't give a flip about what happens to 3% of the population because they figure they will always be in the 90%. The truth is that now it's 3% (or less) who don't get patted down or porn scanned. And what pisses me off is seeing people who should know better (including some here at RPF) saying stupid stuff like "Why do I care if I'm porn scanned? What do I have to hide?" That's just the way these goons want you. They want you thinking that you are somehow getting off "easy" by submitting to the porn scan instead of submitting to the pat down. They make money off of every porn scanner sold. They don't make money from pat downs. Further these 3D scans are being stored in a national database. Further once they get you used to this crap the next humiliation will be that much easier. People should be mad as hell about this. I think under the surface people are mad as hell, but many have been fooled to thinking that the government is doing this to "keep you safe". People have forgotten that the underwear bomber's father told the U.S. embassy that his son was a terrorist before the bombing attempt happened but that the U.S. government refused to take action. People are unaware of the fact that the GAO, the government's OWN bipartisan investigative body sand that the porno scanners would not have stopped the underwear bomber! It's time to stop this all.

How about telling your congressman I won't fly because i either have to submit my child to being viewed through a naked x-ray machine by a potential pedophile and getting a possibly dangerous dose of radiation while he's at it, or submitting to being groped by a potential pedophile. Or better yet congressman, if you don't do something about this you will be out of a job. You work for me and I don't give a flip if you think my concerns are "reasonable" or not! Good freaking grief! I heard rumors about the naked body scanners coming to airports back in 2002. And they were featured in the sci-fi dystopian flick Total Recall. Nobody believed that our government would go that far back then. So now we've reached a point that this crap is acceptable and it's only a problem if our kids are actually grabbed? Screw that! I wonder what the founding father who revolted over a tea tax and redcoats writing their own warrants would think of what pansies our nation has become.

No, I agree, it probably wasn't well thought out.

Even though it's a small number searches and an even smaller number of people that fit this description, a rational, red blooded husband and father, would not be in the mood to think things out calmly and rationally after having some TSA asshole shove his mitts down his daughter's pants.

That's why my family can't fly, because if that happened to my little girl, somebody would be leaving the airport on a stretcher.

That's what's getting nerve wracking about all this shit: "tensions are high" and one side or the other is going to push things over the edge, and then it will spin up and out of control, there will be no controlling it then.

Even though I think all of us realize, in the end, that is what it is going to take.

“I don’t know who Alex Jones is… No idea,” Patrick said.

Dan Patrick almost certainly knows who Alex Jones is. He went on Alex's show a few years ago, but if I recall correctly he distanced himself from the appearance after finding out some of Alex's views, says he wouldn't go back on. That's just my hazy recollection.
