As the current debate over fiscal reform suggests, very few proposals for fundamental changes in tax policy have the potential to command support across the ideological spectrum. The "FairTax" is the great exception. Correctly understood, the Fair Tax Act (HR 25, S13 with 67 cosponsors (http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=news_cosponsor)), which would replace almost all federal taxes with a direct tax on consumption, should appeal to conservatives, progressives, and libertarians alike.

No. Eliminate income tax, replace it with nothing. Government would still get as much tax revenue as it did in 1997. That's more than plenty.

That's a good future goal, but we can't eliminate income tax overnight.

Options 2 and 3 in the poll are not mutually exclusive. I would probably agree with both of them.

This. I'd vote for a Fair Tax to replace the current scheme and then work to eliminate it.

I stand with Ron Paul:

But he also said he fears we would end up with BOTH the fairtax and the income tax.

Perhaps, but from what I have seen in looking at it, I doubt that. At least in it's present incarnation.
A flat tax, and without the convoluted exemptions and loopholes would be more fair, but Government Spending needs to be addressed as well.
That is the real issue.

Yeah, the biggest issue with the FairTax is that it isn't being designed to cut taxes, it's just simplifying the code...which I guess you could argue MIGHT make the whole process "fair" but it really isn't fair to confiscate wealth in the first place.

The issue is taxes, not the type of tax system.
