I know there was a thread already started on the Patriot Act today, but this is so urgent and important I wanted to make sure enough people saw it. Please click on the following link. There is a pre-written letter that you can send to Congress:

Thank you! I added this note:

As a registered Republican, conservative and Constitutionalist, I find the (Orwellian) Patriot Act repugnant, the constant attacks on our natural rights by all three branches an abomination, and a slap in the face of our Founders.

Please stop picking and choosing which parts of the Bill of Rights are worthy of Republican defense. You're either with the Constitution, or you're against it.

I look forward to the roll call vote so I can see which side you are on -- liberty or tyranny.

It's good to have a letter, and C4L has a petition if you go to their site. The only thing about yours is that they would have to vote yes on cloture to do this. I have been telling my Senators to vote NO on cloture (they won't) then if that fails to vote for the amendment that repeals the NS letters outright. The 'meaningful reform' is too squishy for me in that letter. At this point, if cloture goes to a vote as planned, that is in half an hour, and then we can send more crafted language about reforms.

I agree, but I sent it anyway. I also sent them each another via C4L and C&Ped the petition in the letter.

Go for it. They don't have time to read them now anyhow. Volume is good.

Reason: Jon Tester to Vote "No" on PATRIOT Act Renewal (http://reason.com/blog/2011/05/23/jon-tester-to-vote-no-on-patri)

Senator Jon Tester (D-Montana) just announced on the Senate floor that he's going to vote against renewing the PATRIOT Act for four years unless Fourth Amendment-violating aspects of the law are changed. He called the act "bad policy that has put on us a very slippery slope," and unless its changed, said he'll vote against renewal "in the name of freedom and privacy."

Watch the rest of the Senate's Democrats defend the PATRIOT Act in all its glory on CSPAN (http://c-span.org/Live-Video/C-SPAN2/).

Bonus: Sen. Arlen Specter just said he supports a "permanent extension" and the "permanent reauthorization" of the three most contested provisions of the act.

Bonus II: Sen. Rand Paul: "If you don't protect the entire Bill of Rights, you're not going to have any of it." And a good reality-based line: "We have so much audio that they cannot even listen to it all...My point is that we're eavesdropping on so many people that we're missing stuff."

Bonus III: I asked Julian Sanchez, who's done great investigative work on the PATRIOT Act both here and at Cato, what the odds are that the act won't be renewed. His response: "They'll let these provisions lapse right after they pass the Puppy Strangulation Act of 2011. Nobody wants to be accused of 'weakening' Patriot if another attack happens, even though there's little evidence added safeguards would seriously hamper intel gathering."

Specter? He's not in CONgress anymore!

Rand should have place a hold on it.

The Senate has advanced a four-year extension of the Patriot Act, the controversial law that governs the search for terrorists on American soil. Lawmakers voted 74-8 to debate the legislation this week. Three provisions expire on Friday unless the House and Senate agree to renew them.

President Barack Obama is in Europe, so any bill Congress passes must be physically flown to him and signed into law by the deadline.
