USDA Certified Organic’s Dirty Little Secret: Neotame
By Barbara H. Peterson
Farm Wars
Just when we thought that buying “Organic” was safe, we run headlong into the deliberate poisoning of our organic food supply by the FDA in collusion with none other than the folks who brought us Aspartame. NutraSweet, a former Monsanto asset, has developed a new and improved version of this neurotoxin called Neotame.
Neotame has similar structure to aspartame — except that, from it’s structure, appears to be even more toxic than aspartame. This potential increase in toxicity will make up for the fact that less will be used in diet drinks. Like aspartame, some of the concerns include gradual neurotoxic and immunotoxic damage from the combination of the formaldehyde metabolite (which is toxic at extremely low doses) and the excitotoxic amino acid. (Holisticmed.com)
But surely, this product would be labeled! NOT SO!!! For this little gem, no labeling required. And it is even included in USDA Certified Organic food.
The food labeling requirements required for aspartame have now been dropped for Neotame, and no one is clear why this was allowed to happen. Neotame has been ruled acceptable, and without being included on the list of ingredients, for:
USDA Certified Organic food items.
Certified Kosher products with the official letter k inside the circle on labels. (Janet Hull)

I think it was neotame that was on the ingredient list for Target brand iced tea. It also had sugar listed and was not advertised as a reduced sugar drink mix. I noticed it tasted funny - and only then checked the ingredient list.

This is scary. Our food supply is being poisoned more and more all the time. When will it stop?

Never, most likely. I would be very surprised if enough people cared enough to affect a reversal.

This substance looks to be incredibility safe. Here is an overview on the toxicity of Neotame that combines the work of many studies.

Neotame is hardly new. It has been on the market for 9 years. There were able to recover close to 100% of all the neotame metabolites from human test subjects. Most if it is passed in the poop, 98% of metabolites. The other 2% is passed in the urine.

Yeah, Tom Vilsack is Secretary of Agruculture, but we still have a free market. And government isn't taking it upon itself to label things as 'organic' and 'kosher' for any reason but they love us and want us to be happy.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I thought I saw the Easter Bunny...

This should be a priority for Paul when he gets elected. :) I honestly don't care about much else as long as I have my health and my family and friends. Being healthy, to me, is one of the most fundamental ways of fighting the man.

Well, maybe if you helped this small group reversing this travesty, and that small group in reversing the other travesty, and every small group in reversing the travesties, they'll all help you reverse the travesty that bothers you most. Ya think?
It really has gotten to that point.

Despite all that, what reason would there be to give an exception from being listed as an ingredient? And is it "organic"?

I looked into this earlier this year. I never could get enough information to decide whether or not the complaint was legitimate or not. It's best to be cautious though. Another article seems to indicate that it can listed under ingredients as a flavoring. I think complete and accurate disclosure of what is in our food is essential. That's the biggest problem I have with GMO products. They do not have to be labeled. Why cant we know. It these things are so great we will certainly spend our hard earned $ on them. No need to hide the truth from us.
Monsanto and Bayer are very powerful and often get their way with Congress and the FDA (and the courts for that fact).

It should be labeled along with everything else that is present in the product. The organic standard has a loophole. Check this out.
Processed products that contain at least 70 percent
organic ingredients can use the phrase “made
with organic ingredients” and list up to three of the
organic ingredients or food groups on the principal
display panel.
