Ron Paul's greatest strength in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination - his laser focus on the Constitution — might also be his greatest weakness, particularly in Iowa, political observers say.

The blogosphere exploded Friday when the U.S. representative from Texas officially announced his 2012 candidacy on ABC's "Good Morning America," but the 12-term lawmaker will need more than Facebook friends and grass-roots gangbusters to win in the Hawkeye State and beyond.

Paul's message of strict adherence to the Constitution energizes a vocal portion of the party, but his libertarian logic makes some GOP faithful uneasy, observers said.

"Ron Paul has support that is about an inch wide and a mile deep left over from the 2007-08 campaign," said Dennis Goldford, a Drake University politics professor. "He says some things about the economy and foreign policy that really energize a relatively small segment of the Republican Party. But he marches to enough of a different drumbeat that mainstream Republicans have never been totally comfortable with him."

Ron is appealing to more and more people everyday. Half of the new liberty activists became supporters AFTER the 2008 campaign (myself included). I am seeing normal everday joe's opening up to Ron's message.
