Two City Councilmen said they'll introduce a bill making it a misdemeanor to watch porn within 100 feet of a child in a public library.

The legislation, sponsored by David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) and Eric Ulrich (R-Queens), would carry a fine of up to $10,000 and prison time for anyone found guilty.

Seriously, who watches porn in a library??? Second of all, do we not have enough regulation in this country, we actually have to make it a law to not watch porn in a library?

How about simply BLOCKING PORN SITES ON the web browsers at libraries???? Is it really that hard to figure out and the problem is so rampant we actually have to make a law about it? There is a simple technical solution to this problem, why don't they focus on that instead of wasting time drafting laws.

And for anyone that claims the filtering software can be hacked, well those people who are savvy enough to bypass that software well...THEY ARE COMPUTER GEEKS ANYWAY SO IT'S 99.99% CERTAIN THEY ALREADY OWN A COMPUTER AND WATCH PORN IN THE PRIVACY OF THEIR OWN HOME!!!

Oh no, someone watched porn in a public library, we need a law to stop this! Think of the children! Oh the humanity!!!

HOW ABOUT YOU JUST PUT A DAMN PORN FILTER ON YOUR GODDAMN LIBRARY COMPUTERS AND END THIS TOPIC!!!!

So what is the penalty when a "child" watches porn in a library within 100' of another "child"?

Teens KNOW how to get around this stuff - and they are not all geeks.

Oh, I thought this was some article about a public library being billed for porn.

Well there can be rules created to deal with this, but I think the Library is capable of handling that. You don't need the city council to pass a law.

Or if someone is abusing the internet then revoke their access and library card.

Whats next?
No chewing gum in the library?
No spitballs?
No talking loud and disrupting people trying to study?

If someone pays taxes for that library to exist, they have every right to watch porn there.

I really doubt that before this law you could watch porn in a library next to a kid and nothing would happen.

I can just see checking my email in the library, not realizing an email is spam, and having a porn link pop-up and getting arrested for a crime.

Even if a judge would let me off because there was no criminal intent, I still get arrested, smeared all over my local newspapers and have my reputation ruined, have to pay a lawyer thousands of dollars to get me off, and then have to fork over a grand or so more to get the arrest record expunged or I will forever look like a library perv to future employees - and that is all IF I get off the hook for an honest mistake.

I often wonder if the point if these laws is not to make the legal system more money and to just subjugate honest, law-abiding citizens. Actually, I'm not wondering. That's what it is all about - plus a politician desperately pandering for votes,

You pass a law like this, and I will never us a library again.

U know, I'm tempted to donate an entire section to a library - book bindings can be colorful, and in aggregate, arranged the right way - say via Dewey Decimal.....

When I was in IT we actually found some free programs that fellow programmers had trouble getting around. At that point I think they are good enough on a public library.

When I was in IT, working for a local school district, I got laid off for telling the truth. The contractree asked me if I could guarantee that never any porno would enter their net. I told them no. We could block most of it, but 2-5% would still get through. My competing contractor lied and said they could guarantee 100% blockage. They got the contract. They told them what they wanted to hear. The other half of what I was doing for a living was system penetration and I gave them a realistic estimate of what a 15yo with no special skills could do. Trivially.

ps: I headed a project that the "script kiddies" used our code for nefarious purposes - yeah - we wrote the penetration programs. 11 countries, 60 members... All cream of the crop....

Blocking porn at libraries would violate the 1st amendment freedom to speech. At question are PUBLICLY-FUNDED libraries. Saying which speech is okay and not okay to access is not the role of government.

Which brings an obvious conclusion to mind: libraries should not be publicly-funded.

Bypassing proxies is child's play. Almost everyone did it in high school. One kid actually sold USB drives with an app right on it. Double-click and a web browser which could bypass the filters. Good to note if you're a hawk over your kids' Internet usage and're relying on filters.

Hey... :D -- by the way - why isn't anyone challenging school districts' policy of filtering out websites? They did actually block a lot of legitimate informational sites. As long as there are public schools, I say every kid in those schools should have access to hardcore pornography, Stormfront, and Facebook.

Exactly. 2-5% is sufficient.
