me and the new wife today noticed that the msm is now spelling Osama with a "U". as far as i can remember its always been spelled with an "O". is this being done on purpose so that the Osama wont be mistaken with Obama as easily since seemingly almost all of the talk show host have been getting the names mixed up in their stories? seems to me they might be doing this on purpose to "untie" the two names....

and i dont have time right now to look through the last weeks post that ive missed.

As long as it is not mixed up with "Obama", either spelling should be fine.

It seems most news agencies called him Osama until recently. I don't believe Fox ever called him Usama. From one day to the next, it changed. It would be interesting to see that memo.

Probably after too many goofs like this:

I noticed the change to Usama too. I think that's a pretty good theory you got there.

They are no where alike, why people keep mixing them up?

On a lighter note, notice the spelling mistake in Fox coverage is in Ben Quale quote...his daddy also had an habit of spelling problems LOL

Someone at that Fox station was having some fun probably on purpose.

If you like Obama it's Usama. If you don't like Obama it's Osama. And by any other name would smell the same. Both of them.

Did FOX used to not like Obama and then started liking him after Osama was killed (jury still out on that one since there was no jury before the execution)?

Why wouldn't Faux like Obama? Didn't Murdoch contribute to his campaign? Didn't he start a third war?

Well, yeah, after years of only pretending not to, you're probably right.

It's a phonetic thing. They sound alike, so the media ran with OBL while the government used UBL. The media finally caught on.

I support Usama. I don't like that Osame guy.

It does seem reasonable that it was done to cut down on Obama mixups. I've seen both spellings before and "Usama" was the more esoteric spelling prior to Obama's presidency.

Now then. Khaddafi, Ghaddafi or Q'daffi? Or just Daffy?

I've definitely seen- and had non-political friends notice and comment on while watching TV coverage- the upsurge in the media of the "usama" spelling. Our initial theory when we saw on Fox was actually somewhat the opposite- that "usama" is a subtle attempt to distance Obama's victory in killing "usama" from the widespread decade-long hate fest against the man most americans know as "osama." I think cutting down on the Obama/Osama errors is actually a much more plausible- and amusingly harmless- explanation.

Both spellings are perfectly acceptable- there is no single standard arabic-to-latin translitertation. I've been told "usama" is the closer to how arabic speakers would pronounce the name.

Going back to my college days: Arabic, Hebrew and Aramaic don't use vowels like we do (if at all), and when translated it's sometimes the case that different vowels are appropriate in names, depending on pronunciation.

Source: College course on the Old Testament where we had several Middle Eastern students and a professor studying Aramaic. We have some folks here who'd certainly know better than I would though.

The name Usama has been used by the FBI since 1996. Fox used it for years and now the rest of the MSM is using it at teh very same time Obama killed Usama. However, yes if you want to call him Ubama 2012 because you don't want to mix the terrorists up then that is fine. :collins::collins::collins:
