www.ronpaulrides.com (http://www.ronpaulrides.com)

this is what i'm imagining:

someone wants to get to ames but doesn't have a car or the funds.

he logs in to ronpaulrides clicks (something) is directed to a map of iowa.

he finds a car nearby placed there by a different user offering the ride.

he contacts that person through the site - they're off to ames!

If your looking for an image map of the US, you are welcome to steal mine from http://freesharing.org/ with all the coordinates already taken care of for ya.

Then I suggest you do not use flash at all so people with cell phones can surf it for last min info, find the right address in route, ect.

The code includes the side links next to the map, you can cut that out easy enough if not needed.

good point. i can set up a sub-domain for mobiles though.

this is what i'm imagining:

someone wants to get to ames but doesn't have a car or the funds.

he logs in to ronpaulrides clicks (something) is directed to a map of iowa.

he finds a car nearby placed there by a different user offering the ride.

he contacts that person through the site - they're off to ames!

Yeah its a good idea.

Yeah sure a subdomain for mobile will work. If you need a really good mobile redirect code let me know and I can PM you it.

You can download the pic directly from the site, here is the code:

+ rep man! thanks!

maybe i'll just drop that in on the front page if the consensus is practicality over flair :)

No problem, just be aware that if you resize the pic, all the coordinates will be off and have to be redone, which would be a major pain in the ass.

cool. thanks for the heads up!

i'm still trying to get my head around building a nation-wide website.

maybe i should just list events in order of importance and have people find rides that way...

a bit stuck on the practical things...hence the flair :)

Good idea for a site. Save yourself some headache, get a good design plan before you work too much on it. Then when you are ready to work on it, have an effective plan to achieve in a logical order. I don't have much more to offer than good luck! do it!

In regards to resizing that map, all coordinates are in the northeast quadrant of the origin, so you would just apply the resize ratio to all of them, like of you wanted to make the picture half size, you would apply (0.5 * X) or (0.5 * Y). If it was 1.5x the size, then use (1.5 * X), etc.

getting there...

www.ronpaulrides.com

so --

here's my plan

you go to www.ronpaulrides.com

you click "i got a ride" and enter a marker on the map leaving your email address inside the marker text.

someone else looking for a ride clicks "i need a ride" and pulls up a map with all the markers (working on getting the markers to sort by event /color coding)

user clicks on the marker, and emails the ride - organization is taken off site.

------ is that cool or would it be better to be redirected to a forum where people could discuss arrangements?
