I posted this in the Opposing Candidates forum but it's picking up steam in the news as several blogs are starting to report on this (please delete one of the two threads).

There is no direct quote from Romney saying that he supported the bill but in an interview with The New Republic’s John Judis in 1994 Judis said that Romney would have voted for the bill.

It's interesting to see that current Republican Senators Orrin Hatch, Richard Lugar, and Chuck Grassley were original co-sponsors of the bill in 1993.

Slate provides an update here (http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/weigel/archive/2011/05/11/romney-backed-health-care-mandate-in-1994.aspx):

Team Romney responds with a statement from Andrea Saul:

Governor Romney has made it very clear over the last many years, including during the 2008 presidential cycle, that he opposes a federally imposed individual mandate.

That SOB is going to run on eliminating Obamacare and the mass of idiots in this country are going to buy into that lie unless we make a concerted effort to expose his record of hypocrisy.

Exposing his record of hypocrisy doesn't necessarily mean they won't vote for them. They've voted for hypocrites in the past, and will happily do it again. I believe the concentrated effort should be exposing the message of liberty and sound money. Everyone of those "mass of idiots" are potential Ron Paul voters, so be nice. Romney's record will speak for itself, he can't polish a turd.
