President Barack Obama will announce Tuesday during a speech near the U.S. border that he plans a fresh push for immigration policy reform ahead of the 2012 election, calling for a legislative solution that comes from Congress instead of his desk alone.

The White House and other officials will promote the debate by staging a series of community town halls to raise the debate's profile in the media and bring in more voices than just the president's, Raw Story has learned.

The town halls will be modeled similarly to the community debates that took place during the president's push for health reform.

Support from both a Republican and a Democratic president, from a growing electoral bloc interested in the issue and from elites in both parties have done little to advance bills making it easier for illegal immigrants currently in the United States to become U.S. citizens.

It appears unlikely that situation will change for President Obama in 2011. Four years after then-President George W. Bush failed to move Congress on the issue, Obama will launch his biggest sustained push as president to pass immigration legislation with a speech in El Paso on Tuesday.

Transparently political. If he wanted to actually do this he would have done it before the R's had a large majority in congress.

He's trying to rile up his base, for the election. He did this with the dream act before the last election. He uses them. This isn't good for illegal immigrants because it puts them back on the front burner for anger at a time when there is no possibility of this passing, just for Obama's election purposes.

Politics 101...

Grab that Latino vote... if the Republicans vote against amnesty, guess who the Hispanic voters will vote in a decisive majority?

Hispanic voters account for 11.3% of the US population with a current birth rate double the national average... since the presidential elections are decided by a few percentage points, setup the rigged 2012 game now. These scummy campaign staff leaders behind the scenes look at all the demographics... what legislation to push timed just right.

More free shit for anybody... just vote for US!

This doesn't surprise me. I was in south Texas last summer and there were pregnant hispanic women everywhere! They will be the majority in a few more decades, so it will remain politically expedient to reach out to them for a while.

I don't think all Hispanics are in favor of amnesty for illegal immigrants.

I didn't even think a lot of liberals were for amnesty.

I do not support any "immigration reform" from either side of "the aisle" unless it looks into seriously getting rid of the drug war and the welfare state.
